OCPN and generic USB GPS devices
work really nice with most flavors of
Linux. I can definitely vouch for Ubuntu, on Dell laptops, and Raspberry Pi 3B or 4, running the popular distros. Another good option is a Samsung Tab 2 or above, running either stock Android, or rooted and running a third party version of Android. The onboard GPS is automatically picked up.
that's probably not the sort of answer you were looking for. You probably want to use your new laptop and since you mentioned drivers, you are probably running WinDOHs and want to continue doing so. Most basic
hardware is already coded into most
Linux distros, so no drivers needed.
First thing, I would try some different GPS apps and see if they pick up your GPS. Then from there, TBH I have been out of the WinDOHs world so long I don't remember how to check for installed devices or how to determine what port they are on. It just works, on Linux. A much simpler OS to use. You may have to reset the port or the baud rate. Maybe there is some issue with USB 3.0 if your previous success was with the GPS connected to a USB 2.0 port, though I have never seen anything like that. Then again, I am running Ubuntu and we seldom see issues like that.
