GPS based Odometer

A GPS based Odometer has now been made available for OpenCPN version 5.0 and higher. It is a simple odometer with these basic functions:

An optional Speedometer with both analog and digital readout.
A Total Distance log, always displayed.
A Trip Distance log, always displayed.
An optional Deparure / Arrival timer with digital readout
A Trip reset button that resets Trip, Departure Time and Arrival Time
An optional Leg Trip Time and Distance counter including a Leg Reset button

The instruments are shown in the above listed order. It is not possible to change the order, only to toggle the optional instruments on and off. The instruments for Total Distance, Trip Distance plus the Trip Reset button can not be toggled off.

The plugin is based on the OpenCPN dashboard plugin and the idea is to make a GPS based Odometer that is as straight-forward as possible. It has a minimum of options to allow for easy use and a minimum of handling. Just leave the GPS Odometer on screen and reset the trip counter once the trip is ended (and log written?) or before the new trip starts.

As the GPS Odometer is GPS based it, of course, requires NMEA 0183 signals RMC and GGA to be received for any data to be shown.

Currently the only languages supported are English and Swedish but more languages are to follow shortly.

Please se the page 'https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=opencpn/opencpn_user_manual/plugins/other/odometer' for additional information.

The 'GPS Odometer' is available in the package manager.

Re: GPS based Odometer

Simi 60,
it should be available in package manager, also for win10. I do not use/own a Windows machine (have not for many years). Would appreciate others testing it as well.
Also: The website link is ok on my machine if using v0.2.4.0.

Thanks!

sv_pelagia,
that is very odd as the same code works on both Linux and Windows (haven't heard about mac yet).

Can't see where the problem is but will look further. Maybe the community can share some light on it.

Lennart,

does install and show up under macOS Catalina.
Duplicate entry in the plug-in list when selecting GPS odo.
Rest looks ok, numbers are perhaps a little tiny.

Night mode has an issue: bright white text

bcn,
thanks, The duplicate will be removed asap and I will find the reason for the bright text, clearly a mistake.
Text sizes can be changed in the settings dialogue.

Re: GPS based Odometer

Hello LennartG,

I started by installing update the "Master" list and installing the latest version of the GPS-Odometer_pi plugin.

I am used to doing all the translations of the OpenCPN language files and plugins. As usual, I will therefore also translate those of this plugin.

That said, I observe after checking Crowdin, that there are some strange things. There are items, translated into French on my PC, but missing from the language file of this plugin in Crowdin. See screen copy. This not good.

This means that OpenCPN uses items already translated into the core of OpenCPN. But, if one day, Dave removes these items from the core or if I modify the translation in the core language file, the translations may no longer appear or no longer have a meaning adapted to this plugin.

Gilletarom.

In post # 1 of this thread, I read this:

Being on the ground, I test your plugin with VDR, by playing a pre-recorded file of NMEA sentences. Apparently everything is working fine. See screenshot.

However, if you observe the NMEA stream, there is no GGA type NMEA sentence.
So I guess, that kind of phrase is not needed.

Am I wrong?
Gilletarom.

Oups ... After another try, I just saw that the NMEA stream contains rare GGA-like phrases. See second screen copy.

Re: GPS based Odometer

Gilleratom,
nice to see it working and are looking forward to the translations.
OpenCPN items: Not sure that 'using the same translation' will cause any problems, it is also locally contained.
Note about the buttons: These are of fixed size so please be careful with the text string length.
GGA: You just found an 'inconvenience' in that, depending on message order or if GGA is lost GGA may not work as expected. Are currently rewriting the watchdog handling to take care of this. GGA is a good GPS quality safekeeper.

Re: GPS based Odometer

I am wondering why another plugin is needed. An enhancement of the dashboard_pi plugin should do the same. It is often difficult to invent the wheel another time.

Re: GPS based Odometer

CarCode,
The simple answer is: It has been on the request list for over two years and for me it was easier to do a separate plugin than an extension. It is all a matter of priorities, this was mine.

Re: GPS based Odometer

A new release, v. 0.2.5, of the GPS Odometer is now available.
The changes are:
- The Speedometer will not show any data if either RMC or GGA is not available. This is now correct even if the signal is lost while used. There is a five seconds timeout to allow for short interruptions.
- Night mode for the reset buttons is now corrected, the text is no longer light gray although the button frame is intentionally still visible.
Have also heard that, on Windows, it may happen that the instruments appear in a changed order after an update. This is currently being investigated. The functionality seems however still to be correct.
