Re: Garmin or Lowrance - Which Radar to Buy?

I still haven't build a NMEA bearing sensor because there was no need for without having a radar. However to connect NMEA0183 to a PC and especially to a Mac the best device is the Keyspan USA-19HS which has been never any driver problems to any Windows version. Windows driver poblems are the most common problems to external devices for all Windows versions up to now. So even the Keyspan is a little more expensive as other mostly chinese devices it is worth its money. I use it now for more than 6 years.

And more..
The BR24Radar_pi and OCPN can handle the radar picture without heading but only on a black screen head-up. Not as charts overlay.

Re: Garmin or Lowrance - Which Radar to Buy?

Thank you very much, all together!
I’ll have a nights rest over all the input i got. But it seems that a radar is fairly easy to hook up to OpenCPN. And a heading is not necessary for its functionality. Sounds definitely interesting to me!

Thanks!

blaouh..
Yes, but the whole thing with OCPN and the "new" broadband radars are that you can view the radar picture over your charts.
-You can compare the charts and reality (radar pic).
-You'll get an AIS target correction. (AIS type B can be delayed some minutes)
-It is possible to use GPS-COG instead of a heading, using BR24Radar_pi, but the radar picture position accuracy will be poor. Especially on side drift due to current or wind when COG is not pointing to head. But as a start it could do.

If you can stand a black "silly" radar picture buy a used X-band "tractor". They would be cheep now when broadband are here?

This is only valid for the static data - dynamic data are transmitted every 30s when going faster than 2knots (Class B).
The complete information here: AIS | Official OpenCPN Homepage
(scrolling down)

Obviously there are the non-AIS equipped targets you may want to know about.
On your chart.

bcn..
Yes of course and those tugging a slow fish line in the middle of a narrow passage at deep fog are suddenly there in front of you if without a radar correcting there's position.
