First timer needing help

Good Morning folks. We got this nasty message when we booted up opencpm this morning and I have no idea the best way to fix it.

This is the message we got:
Failed to initialize the user interface. OpenCPM cannot start. The necessary configuration files were not found. See the log file at E:\ProgramFiles\OpenCPM\opencpm.log for details.

This is a portion of the log file....I'll send the whole thing if you like.

p.s. I would much more eloquently state my gratitude for any help but I am on a cell phone hotspot that is unreliable to say the least. So if I sound short at any point, PLEASE forgive me

wonderfulwade...
It seems that you are running OpenCPN in portable mode, right? From some external storage connected via USB? My first guess is a corrupted filesystem. Also, OpenCPN 3.2.0 is very outdated, consider migrating to the now stable 4.2.

Yes, Sir we are using the version that came on the stick we ordered with the GPS. I just downloaded the newer version and am working on setup as we speak. Thank you SO much for responding....we're in the middle of an ICW trip from Panama City Florida to Charleston SC and feeling pretty dang lost without our OpenCPM LOL

Re: First timer needing help

wonderful...
From your log some necessary files are missing from your program catalog.
First you could check for saved XML files instead of: E:\Program Files\OpenCPN\navobj.xml:
If you find navobj.xml.1 rename it to navobj.xml (after deletion of the corrupt one.)

Next step would to update OpenCPN. Since your OCPN version is rather dated I suggest you get the latest stable version 4.2 from Opencpn.org. If you're using more plugins than "Dashboard_pi, grib_pi and WMM_pi you also have to fetch a new release for each since the old once not fit into ver 4.2

Håkan

If you like your old OCPN version you could check for saved XML files instead of: E:\Program Files\OpenCPN\navobj.xml:
If you find navobj.xml.1 rename it to navobj.xml (after deletion of the corrupt one.)

Re: First timer needing help

Hi Folks!
God is good today! (yes, everyday) but I was able to get 4.2 downloaded. My final challenge is to get the path I drew in the old version over to the new version. Can anyone help me with that?

I didn't update the version on my USB. I downloaded a whole new version to the laptop and it's working great....just need my path from the old version..

wonderwulf...
It will be a bit less than straightforward as the data on your stick seems to be damaged.
As Hakan says - go to E:\Program Files\OpenCPN and you should find a set of files called navobj.xml.x where x is a number from 1 to 5, these are backups of your data, store them in a safe place and then rename navobj.xml.1 to navobj.xml and try to import it to your newly installed OpenCPN 4.2. Let's see what you get.

OK I renamed the navobj.xml.1 to navobj.xml and put it in the same folder it was in in the old program. Doesn't seem to be picking up on it.....ugh! Any other thoughts?
Sorry for the delay....internet lag kept me from getting back to you sooner

The data are not kept where the program is in a non-portable installation you now have, rename the file to navobj.gpx and then open the route manager and import it.

Will do nohal! I'll give that a shot. We ended up making a long pit stop to wait for a replacement starter in this old girl. Hopefully I'll get to test your theory when we get back to the boat this evening
