Yes, it's possible to convert to kap format which can be used by opencpn. This loses some info as the charts are originally vector. You might look for cm93 instead as it is based on the exact same survey data in 95% of the world (the soundings are in the same place with same values just about everywhere)

You can do the same thing with google imagery, though we really need to support geojpeg or mbtiles natively to greatly reduce file size.

In the US, the charts in the downloader should be sufficient.
