Re: Feature Requests

OpenCPN is running perfectly under W11 - we tested it - and an external GPS mouse will work as usual directly using some virtual COM port.

Re: Feature Requests

Work on Win11- Yes all reports here says no trouble
BU353 - USB ? - Yes, give the puck reasonable free sight to the sky, connect the USB, In OCPN Options-connections- Add a new connection: serial. Drop down for correct COM-port. Check the BU manual for baud rate (4800/9600 ?) and Apply.

EDIT: Sorry bcn reply on next page...

Display scaling not quite working...where should I go with this issue ?

Hi Dave,

I obviously need someone to point me in the right direction...maybe you will ?

Platform is :
-Kubuntu 20.04
-15.6 inches 4K display
- OpenCPN 5.6.0

Situation:
-This is the main computer setup aboard our yacht
-Been living the dream sailing around the world slowly since 2009
-Opencpn has become the main chart plotter over its years of improvement
-Free from Windows at last...Linux OS makes more sense aboard now that I have learned the ropes

Issue:
The small 4k display (15.6inches) is a great fit and power friendly aboard. Its like having a big display...the desktop area is huge and practical. However I have to set the Display Scale to 200% for the fonts to be big enough. This works fine with all desktop application except for OpenCPN. Launching it with this command GDK_SCALE=1 opencpn allows for the chart area to fill in the display just fine. HOWEVER, most of OpenCPN dialog windows don't scale up which makes it almost unreadable.

Setting that I have been messing with:
Settings_Option/User_Interface Window:
Enable Scaled Graphics Interface option when ticked gives mixed results. It scales but give unpredictable and unstable results...looks like a bug to me ?
User Interface Scale Factor slide has no effect on any of the dialogue windows but it does scale the drop down menu bar located on the left !

My hope is that all of this makes some sense to you and that this persisting OpenCPN issue could be address at some point in time.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Re: Feature Requests

Might be going into OpenCPN user interface settings and double each font size one by one will do it. Or by editing font sizes manually in opencpn.conf.

Great...I have just been doubling all the font found in the opencpn.conf. That leaves 2 issues:
  1. Right-Click context menu font still very small (any pointers to where the font are defined in the opencpn.conf ?
  2. Radar Dialogue Window did not resized...this windows is also not resizable...any hints for this ?
p.s.: I could not screen capture the Right-Click Context menu

Feature Requests : Resisable Radar Dialogue Windows

Platform is :
-Kubuntu 20.04
-15.6 inches 4K display with Scale factor set at 200%
- OpenCPN 5.6.0
- Radar 5.2.2

May I suggest making the Radar Dialogue Windows resizable to accommodate font setting ?

In this case, using a smaller font makes for difficult reading.

Next step is couldn’t achieve everything with OpenCPN settings is to apply changes to your Window manager theme or gtk settings.

gtk2
and gtk3
have its own settings you can put under users home directory

Ok, here is what I was able to do so far. Playing with the Window manager theme or gtk settings can set radar dialogue window size bigger but the content of the windows does not resize.

All of this seams to be tied to how OpenCPN's User Interface display scaling options are implemented.

How can I help attract attentions to this problem ?

I can report and points to various scaling issue but can't really dive into code to propose a fix.

Please help.

spirare...
Without having dug deep in your posts just for info:
The font size for radar_pi windows is based on OCPN Options->User interface->Fonts: "Dialog"

Hi,

Indeed it is... but the ramification of OCPN not scaling properly is spread across many dialogue windows.

The illustrated case of the radar dialog shows that a bigger fonts expand outside the fix dialogue windows size and is not visible. That is the case since the dialogue windows does not resize bigger to accommodate the bigger font. Forcing a bigger dialogue window by adjusting the desktop setting (aka GTK) as illustrated does not address the issue. The only 'work around' is to set the fonts small...then it's simply unreadable.

I would really like to help & contribute to solve what is definitively a problem in OCPN display scaling feature. All 'context menu' (mouse right click) and property windows simply don't scale... some dialogue windows does while other don't.

Anyone...please ?

Re: Feature Requests

The goal to have one source code for all operation systems and hardware has reached its limits...

Question: what screen size does OpenCPN report? Correct one (horizontal width in mm)?

Re: Feature Requests

I have a new Dell XPS 17 with 4k Display with Win10.

You have to set the OS System Display settings for text to 250%.
Opencpn does not have this function, I believe it is an OS function.
Doesn't kubuntu provide this important feature?
Here are my OS settings, OpenCPN settings, and right click result with 4k screen.
