Engine/voltage status from NMEA log?

Hi,

I have been collecting NMEA logs from OpenCpn using the VDR plugin, with a view to analysing them for performance when sailing. However not having thought this through properly they all contain periods when I'm motoring. I'd like to remove these with a simple program but I'm not having much luck finding some way of identifying when the engine is running. One way of doing this would be by examining the the instrument supply voltage as it would be higher when charging. Is anyone aware of any NMEA sentence which reports the instrument supply voltage? I haven't been able to find one. Alternatively can anyone think of a smart trick to distinguish sailing data from motoring data? My engine has no NMEA reporting.

Thanks in advance,

Aedan

Re: Engine/voltage status from NMEA log?

There is a __RPM NMEA sentence as well as an 'RPM'-type XDR tranducer (Type 'R') option. If you have an RPM sensor on either shaft or engine (or both, the __RPM sentence takes data source as a parameter) you could probably get NMEA data out of that with a bit of glue logic.
