Downloading Charts onto Open CPN

as we don't know exactly what else is screwed up here and as your install of OpenCPN is just for the S-63 charts and there are no other "treasures" as far as I se from the logs and configuration perhaps the straightforward way is

- uninstall you 4.6.1 OpenCPN
- delete the complete \ProgramData\OpenCPN directory
(keep your OpenCPN InstallPermit in some place - it will be valid still)
- download and install OCPN 4.8.0
- install and enable the S-63 Plug-in
and go the S-63 install path again
- UserPermit
- InstallPermit
- Install cell permits
- install cells pointing OCPN to the directory where you have the charts

Does that make sense to you?

I retract that Hubert ... I shut it down, wlaked away, came back & am currently downloading cell permits ... fingers crossed ?

I'm afarid I wasn't able to download the charts Hubert. But there was no directory in Chart Files. I tried manually entering a directory but of course that didn't work. So deleted it again.
Stupid question ... could Avast or Malwarebytes be affecting the download ? I assume not given that I was able to get OpenCPN to work 1 night ?
Round 15 tomorrow ? I've had enough for tonight.

as you are quite some hours in advance, here my recommendations for tomorrow:

The so-called AV products can interfere - we had all type of surprises over the years.

What do you mean with "I'm afraid I wasn't able to download the charts"?

You did download the charts already, so those should be on your PC.

If broken or erased then you have at
http://www.hydro.gov.au/software/pro...c/enc-base.zip
the download of the complete AUS chart set. Download it and unzip it.
To a directory that will stay on the PC you are using the charts at.

Download the update set as well:
http://www.hydro.gov.au/software/pro...enc-update.zip

This one shall go into a different directory from the base set.
You will need to use the update once the base set is installed


At the S-63 tab|Chart Cells you shall see the permits you have already imported. Checked and ok?

Now you go to Import Charts/Updates and the plug-in will ask you for the root directory. Point it to this directory and start the import.
See the screen shot below how to find the ENC_ROOT directory.

You will be asked if the SENC format for all the charts should be created on the fly - accept. And wait, depending on the number and size of charts this will take some time.

Once the charts in place you might want to apply the updates - same procedure, just pointing to the root directory of the update set now.

AHS/AHO will publish update sets periodically. During your licensing period download these update sets and apply them periodically.
Don't mix-up the directory structure of the base set with the update set.

I'm guessing AV isn't a problem in my case Hubert, I've downloaded the charts onto my laptop, importing them onto OpenCPN is the problem.

Hi Brian...

in the log there is a message that the Catalog.031 file is not found.
If you look at my screen shot of the directory structure, this file should be in the ENC_ROOT folder.
How does your folder look like?

No it wasn't Hubert. I did a search & found "a" CATALOG.031 (please see attached) & copied it ... didn't appear to solve the import issue ?

every S-63 chart set has its CATALOG.031 file describing the content of that set - you can't copy those to another set.

I've downloaded the enc_base file now and the structure looks like this for me:



Completely standard and correct....
That's the root folder we are looking for.
So what are you doing with the downloaded zip to expand it???

I just unzipped "enc-base" again & it made a folder "enc-base" in Downloads. "enc-base" has ENC_ROOT within & ENC_ROOT has CATALOG.31 within. So I tried importing again. The charts appear to have been imported ?

So does this mean the problem .. well the latest problem ... was me extracting from a zipped folder ? I did say I thought it was something silly ... well in this case really really stupid I had or had not done ? That is not an atempt @ mitigation, not @ all ! ... it appears this was entirely my stupid fault & I put my hands up to that !

But I am curious ... why did it work about 5 days ago, then fail & now work again ?

All I have to do now is get the aerial to connect & learn how to drive OpenCPN !

So what can I say ... thank God you don't live in Tasmania ... how many beers do I owe you ? ! Sincerest apologies & thank you very much.

now don't forget that the folder has to stay in place!

Most probably you did copy or deleted something the first time damaging the data set. Who knows if you don't remember any longer?

I think this is a pretty instructive sequence. It should be labeled how to persevere despite difficulties following the required steps, and yet in the end succeed!

Is there anything that I we put into the Plugin Manual to would help?

I would entertain a single page detailed summary from a user's perspective of how to do it, including DO's and DONT'S. We could add it to the manual for others to follow after BCN reviews?

I think we shall not double this up as any update would require to touch both places. How much would you bet that they will get out of sync?
