Donations and Hardware
Hello OpenCPN users....
The OpenCPN donation stream, while never strong, has dwindled to nothing and essentially gone dormant.
Meanwhile, we have ongoing needs for particular hardware to facilitate continued improvement in OpenCPN.
Current needs:
1. A relatively modern 64 bit Mac, to replace the creaky old Hackintosh which recently died.
2. A minimal Windows7 64 bit capable laptop, to solve once and for all the Prolific/BU353 USB-to-serial adapter hang problem that is often seen in the field.
Factoid:
Last time I looked we have had more than 180,00 downloads YTD. That's a lot, and I think you will agree that we seem to have a bunch of happy users.
Download Statistics: All Files
So, lets see if we can re-energize the donation stream a bit, and help to keep OpenCPN development relevant and current.
Talk to your friends who are O users, and bring more on board. There is plenty of room.
Thanks
Dave

Done...
May I then ask a question ?
I download the Window betas from Opencpn.org. Does your 180 000 figure takes this kind of download into account ?

Re: Donations and Hardware
The link (from the "? " button) to donate is
SourceForge.net: OpenCPN: Make A Donation
(You might think it odd I post the link, but Internet Explorer is so deeply rooted into XP that it's a real nuisance stopping the autolink using it- and I haven't used IE in 10 or 15 years...)

Dave
Perhaps in common with many others I was not aware that further funding was needed at this time.
Maybe it would be worth defining what is needed by the team, listed with a priority. Direct donation of equipment and/or software could also be encouraged and second user kit would probably do.
I suppose my message is that perhaps you need a more structured approach to support from the user community.
Good luck and many thanks !!!

Re: Donations and Hardware
SailorF54...
Thanks you very much.
In answer to your question:
Beta downloads are served by a separate host, and are not counted in the 180,000 number.
Of course, we have no way of knowing what percentage of the 180,000 downloads are due to the repeated actions of 'bots of one sort or another. But I observe the the operating system mix percentages (Windows vs. linux vs. Mac) very closely mirrors the worldwide installed computer system ratios of the same metric. Similar observation applies to the country mix. Leading download country is France, which everyone can agree is populated with avid sailors. So this makes me think that a large percentage of the downloads are real people pushing the "Download" button.
Now, how many are actually installed on boats or otherwise being actively used? We'll never know. But if it is 10%, that still leaves a healthy number, one that any commercial nav system provider would be proud of. Certainly well into $US 7 figures at typical retail prices.
Do the math, and you get food for thought....
Thanks again
Dave

Yes it does, and THAT is it. It's the only link I ever found anywhere .
I think the link should be posted somewhere on the homepage too...not to be begware but it's a bit too far the other way.

Re: Donations and Hardware
I have updated the OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage, to make it easy to donate.
Opinions?

Re: Donations and Hardware
Hello Dave,
I often purchase made by credit card in USA, protected by a security service developed by my bank.
I tried to follow the procedure you propose to make a donation.
But to make a donation by following the proposed procedure, you must either have a Paypal account or open a paypal account ...
But I do not want to open a paypal account. It takes too much private information. There is no question I leave to Paypal.
It is a condition strong for me.
Some traders use Paypal to cash purchases of their customers. But as soon as the customer uses a valid card number, it is not necessary to provide all the information required by Paypal to open a Paypal account.
......
So what if I go for a grumpy, but it seems to me that I did not wrong in my intellectual approach.
Best regards
Gilletarom.
