Displaying Sea Surface Temperature (SST)

I am running version 3.0.2 of OpenCPN with XP/SP3 in GL mode and I easily display wind and barometric pressure data from grib files gotten with zyGrib, which is a very valuable software.

These files also contain, in particular, SST data that I know (I am a physical oceanographer) can provide interesting information for both navigation (one can intuitively infer surface currents), fishing (SST fronts) and ... bathing!

Even though OpenCPN says it supports SST, I am not sure this can be actually done. I would be very pleased to receive any info and eventually help about that.

Thanks in advance,

Claude

In a lot of cases transducers have a temperature sensor. Also in a lot of cases the sounder will output temperature as a NMEA 0182 or NMEA 2000 sentence. Of course you could always hang a YSI sensor over the side and data log that.

I believe here we are talking about displaying SST temperatures from a GRIB using the GRIB plugin.

Is anyone here doing this successfully? If so using what GRIBs?

RTOFS-GRIB via airmail/winlink/sailmail:

send email request to query@saildocs.com
Subject: doesn't matter
Body:
Code:
send RTOFS:36N,25N,083W,075W|0.35,0.42|0,12..120|CUR,WTMP
saildocs will return an email with a file like the one attached (remove .doc extension).

Opencpn displays SST as in screenshot.

Woops...my mistake. Working with physical oceanographers myself, I was thinking he wanted to collect water temperature samples.

Re: Displaying Sea Surface Temperature (SST)

Hello,

Dirk, thanks for this info. I regularly use the query facility of Aimail via Winlink (I'm F4EUT). However, seems to me RTOFS covers only the central part of the Atlantic.

Now, I made a mistake since GFS grib files that you can get via either query/Airmail/Winlink-Sailmail or zyGrib give, in particular, air (not sea surface!) temperature (i.e. T at +2m)!

I'm looking for SST grb products and come back in a couple of days/weeks.

Re: Displaying Sea Surface Temperature (SST)

Good Day,

Partly thanks to Paul Higgins (Sample), my problem, which is to display SST data as a map/chart you can navigate on with e.g., OpenCPN, so as to take advantage of surface currents, or to find a promising fishing spot, or just to better feel the movements of the sea and to entertain a crew during a bay or an ocean crossing, is now solved.

Such data are available for free via numerous websites, e.g., Ocean monitoring and forecasting - MyOcean (please, post here web sites addresses that could be more convenient for other specific areas). When you access the catalogue, choose an area, a parameter (temperature) and observations (as the product type). At best, SST data are proposed with a 1-km pixel on a daily basis, but you can also get temporal and/or spatial composites (to manage with a too large cloud cover). For the Mediterranean Sea in particular, five products are offerred among which the fifth one (1-km, daily) provides the most interesting data via «*info*». Then, after having selected your date and sub-area, adjust the colour scale to have it covering the SST range of your sub-area (the round button), and open it in Google Earth that you let open.

You then follow the classical procedure to display Google Earth data as more or less transparents maps inOpenCPN, using the Paul's GE2KAP software (Paul recomends dowloading the latest -at least V 9.4.35- version), the use of which is widely described online.

In case of any comment or any need of help, please, send me an e-mail.

Enjoy navigating with an info about the SST …

Best regards,

Claude
