I use a very high end industrial side scan sonar unit as part of my
work (a very small part). The
software we use has this as a feature, secondary to geolocating our scans. It works ok if you're into mowing the lawn, otherwise it's just a bunch of disparate transect data. (Think lines not grids). It works for us because we are trying to achieve 100% coverage of our target area (not just cruising around), and we're getting paid to slowly tool up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down some more. Did I mention how dull it can be going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth at 1
knot?
It would be a fun feature to have in a
software package, but I'm not sure
current OpenCPN would be the best fit. Maybe as a standalone bathymetric
generator (something like the GE chart generator).
I'm working on a
project that would have georeferenced
depth data in it, but until I have actual results I'm hesitant to delve into it. Need to temper the failures with a success or two before publicizing :-). If I ever get the #{*+%# thing working I'll open source it.
