Com ports.

Hi all! Have bedn using Ocpn for a few years now. No major issues. But now having a problem with the com port on my computer shutting itself off and then I lose my position on the chart. Using a Garmin gps and a lenovo laptop running windows 8. Really not a big deal but would like to know if it's me or the computer or Ocpn? Thanks in advance

Could be the GPS to computer cable is damaged or defective.
Could be you need to update your driver(s) in Win 8 on the Lenovo.
Could be either the GPS or computer physical port is corroded.
Unlikely to be a problem with OpenCPN.

Re: Com ports.

Go into device manager, click on Universal Serial Bus Controler, click on each of the USB Root Hub, then click on the power management tab. Make sure the check mark in "Allow computer to turn off device" DOES NOT HAVE A CHECK. Do that for every USB Root Hub device in the device manager.

Re: Com ports.

People has reported also battery safe features switching off USB connections with some Windows laptops. Try to find such a setting in Windows. Maybe some Windows users knows more about that...

Re: Com ports.

Add linux to your Lenovo in a dual boot configuration. Use OpenCPN in linux. No problems using OpenCPN in Linux, wipe Windows and make your computer a linux only box...
