CM93 Problem

OpenCPN works well on my Lenovo laptop. The laptop it self I am not very happy about. I recently purchased a Toshiba Netbook and was hoping to get OCPN to run on it. It took mme awhile to get the system stable but I have gotten it to work but cannot get the CM93 charts to work on the program. Here is the log info:

I figure that the database for CM93 is missing I was wondering if anyone could tell me where it is so that I can copy it from my Lenovo to my Toshiba

Hi Charlie,

My guess is you work with CM93 Version 2.
In that case you have a folder on your Lenovo called "CM93".
This CM93 folder contains a huge amount of subfolders called "00300000", "00300060" and so on.

On your Toshiba you should have the same.
If not, you have to copy the CM93 -with all its subfolders- again.

If you do have all the subfolders on your Toshiba, try letting OpenCPN do a complete new build up of the database.

Hope this helps.
Cheers, Len.

Hi Len:

I tried doing a force on the database but this did not make any changes. I am now getting a message from OCPN saying "Not Responding" All I see on the screen is black with a crude world map drawn in blue. If I use version 1.36 of OCPN the program is more stable but I still can't see any charts. I will try downloading a NOAA chart to see if I can see that. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Hi Charlie,

What I would first do is make sure there is an exact copy of CM93 on your Toshiba. I would make another copy anyway and overwrite the old one on your Toshiba and then I would compare the properties of both CM93 folders. Select the folder, right mouseclick and choose "properties". Both the amount of files and the total space used should be exactly the same.

With that out of the way and still no luck, I'd uninstall / reinstall OpenCPN.
I have no real basis for that other then it is a possible cause. Just like your harddrive which could be at fault. But let's stay optimistic...

Cheers,
Len.

Try doing a control click (press control while you click ) on the on the application icon and choose show package contents.
that will let you see into the openCPN 'folder'.

Best.

-- this will let you open the opencpn folder... but.. I do not think this is what you want as a solution, as I think the comments about putting it in your application folder were related to windows....

To begin a new installation of OpenCPN now on your Mac, do the following:
1. Look in your Home folder "Library/Application Support/OpenCPN" for a file "Chartlist.dat" and delete this file.
2. Look in your Home folder "Preferences/cm93" and delete the folder "cm93".
3. Look in your Home folder "Preferences/opencpn" and delete the folder "opencpn".
4. Look in your Home folder "Preferences" for a file named "opencpn.ini" and delete this file.
5. Look where you have saved the CM93 charts on your harddrive.
6. Visit this CM93 folder and check if if this folder contains about more than 100 subfolder (containing the charts) AND also some files named like "CHRLIST.BIN", "CM93ATTR.DIC", "CM93OBJ.DIC", "LIMITS.DIC" and may be also "SERIALNO.TXT" and a file named "*.EXD". If these files are missing in your CM93 folder then your CM93 charts are incomplete.
7. Now you start OpenCPN from your Application folder and make the settings as described in the OpenCPN manual, for your charts see:
Installing Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage

That is all. Do not open the package contents of OpenCPN as mentioned here. That is not needed! Pooking in the package contents might destroy the app.

If you have any further problems please inform us which OpenCPN version you are running.

Re: CM93 Problem

Notice:
If your CM93 folder does not contain the subfolders and files as mentioned above in Point 6 your CM93 database is obviously broken and corrupt. Try to get a new one.

Re: CM93 Problem

Gerhard,

Thanks again for tips, but doesn't seem to want to load up still. I downloaded the recent OpenCPN release 2.3.1 . I could not find many of the files you suggested I delete as it does not look like they were created... The only preference file I found was in my /user/preference file... There is nothing created that references preferences/cm93. My log file is similar to what was posted above. Here are the following few lines

19:01:33: Found probable CM93 database in /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2
19:01:33: Searching directory: /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2 for 00300000.a
19:01:33: Found probable CM93 database in /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2
19:01:36: Loading chart data for /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/A/.DS_Store
19:01:36: ...creation failed for /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/A/.DS_Store
19:01:36: CreateChartTableEntry() failed for file: /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/A/.DS_Store
19:01:36: Not adding chart file: /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/A/.DS_Store
19:01:36: Loading chart data for /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/B/.DS_Store
19:01:36: ...creation failed for /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/B/.DS_Store
19:01:36: CreateChartTableEntry() failed for file: /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/B/.DS_Store
19:01:36: Not adding chart file: /Volumes/Derek - Personal/Sailing 2/03900060/B/.DS_Store

This goes on for all the chart folders in the cm93 library. All of the files you mentioned need to exist in the cm93 library are there.

So I suspect the cm93 file is corrupted somehow. It may be a dumb question, but the cm93 library is an import from a windows machine and this may be the cause of the incompatability issue???

Thanks again and appreciate the time and help you put forward...

Derek

Re: CM93 Problem

It looks to me that you have a corrupted CM93 installation.
This could very well be a Mac specific problem. CarCode ??

What is ".DS_Store" doing there? No such file in CM93. A chart in the "A" directory should look similar to "00300840.A". No other type of files should be present.

From Wikipedia.
Quote:
.DS_Store (Desktop Services Store)[1] is a hidden file created by Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X operating system to store custom attributes of a folder such as the position of icons or the choice of a background image.
You have to get rid of the ".DS_Store" files, OpenCPN treats it as a chart file, hence the message. Hopefully you have some charts present as well.

Re: CM93 Problem

Derek, Thomas,

I am not shure what you are doing here.

The OpenCPN Mac version (Beta 2.3.1) from Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage is an older version which someone inserted there. It is a zip file and it is NOT a dmg file as usual for Mac OS X apps.

Usually Mac OS X applications are *.dmg files which opens the user by double click and drag the app to the application icon over the Application icon in the *.dmg window. That is all to install apps for a Mac.

Please delete this file from Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage
I do not know who has inserted it and I have no rights to insert any file in this section.

You may want to try another Mac OS X version, but this will also still have a lot of bugs. Try to download this one with this address in your browser:

http://www.elmcan.info/OCPN-Cocoa.dmg

After download install as described above. Do not drag the app anywhere else than your Application folder.

Thomas, correct, the .DS_Store files are hidden files in the Mac operating system and resides in any folder. An app file at Mac OS X like OpenCPN is usually visible to the user as one single file only which contains however a folder (named Contents with subfolders) where in our case all the OpenCPN data files, the dynamic libraries, language files etc. resides.

Comparable to Windows the settings files created by OpenCPN are in the Library/Preferences folder of the users Home directory of Mac OS X.

Charts should be gathered into a new created folder also of the Home directory of the user.

I am glad to answer further questions.

Re: CM93 Problem

Gerhard

I changed the link on the download page.
The link now points at the .dmg file
Is it OK now, or do you want any other changes?
PM me.
