CM93 Charts not showing text in Windows 8.1

I've been using OpenCN on my old Mac for ages without any difficulties but I have just installed it on a new Win8.1 machine and there is no text appearing on any of my CM93 charts.

I have tried clicking every option in the Vector Charts tab, including Mariners - Select All and still nothing. Is this a problem with Win 8.1? Any solutions to fix this niggle?

from the manual -

This button toggles all text displayed on a vector chart On and Off.
The hotKey "T" is an alternative for toggling the text.
In OpenGL mode, all text will always be horizontal when using the "Curse Up" option.

Oddly I had gone through the manual this morning and checked the Text button in the "toolbar" but nothing had happened. So I tried again just now and after reseting the vector chart selection to show All Text I was confronted with letters everywhere!! No I have no idea what was stopping the text appearing previously but I have now set to "decluttered" and reduced the font size and all is right in the world.
