Choose heading source

I've got a small issue, not that important but just annoying me. My ship has a gyrocompass which is part of the instrument network and outputting NMEA heading.
However, OpenCPN seems to insist on using the GPS heading. My GPS sends out the heading as a separate sentence, so I disabled this sentence in the filter, but OpenCPN still refuses to use the gyro heading.
It looks like OpenCPN is calculating the heading itself from the GPS position changes, is this true? And how can I force it to use the gyro heading?

Cheers,

Piet

Re: Choose heading source

That sucks. That would really annoy me too, if I had a Gyro, and I was forced to use the GPS heading. I have no recommendations but I understand your frustration.

Re: Choose heading source

Piet...
For me it seems you're talking about two different values?
The HDG or if equipped with a variation table, the HDT from the compass which is used to for example a heading line and;
The COG from the GPS which is used to show course over ground.

To see the heading line you've to give an arrow length in Own ship tools.

Which NMEA sentences are you receiving from the compass?

Re: Choose heading source

I was mostly talking about the own ship pointer.
Obviously the dashboard displays give their respective headings, but for example when the ship is moored, the pointer (and the vector) was just going around in circles.
But as is always the case with these things, I just booted up everything again and now suddenly the right heading is being used. Could be related to which instrument's data OpenCPN receives first maybe? I'll try next time it's not working Thanks for the thinking anyway.

PS: the correct sentence was $IIHDG,250.3,,,,*4E
