To do some other activities but boating perhaps?
What Gerard probably wants is that tiny piece of Danube chart under Slovak jurisdiction to connect the Austrian and Hungarian already published Inland Ecdis charts.

Amazing

Yes! It is amazing to see how complicated things are sometimes. Even with all those engeneers, programmers and so on passing by, we still have difficukties getting those charts.

Of course if you are a USA sailor, NOAA brings them free to you. Here, in Canada, you have to pay an amzing price to get them and keep them fresh.

I happen to have Garmin Mapsource that you have to buy plus Bluecharts you have to buy that works on a Garmin gps, not your laptop... A bit ridiculous since the software and the device are already talking together...

It is amazing to see how this is all about money.

I use to use Nobeltech with raster charts... I was wondering if we could make vector charts like bluecharts which looks very good into raster charts without the tremendous work it probably is... Magic would probably do...

If you know a SIMPLE way to do that, let me know. I would prefer to go back to nobeltech that I am use to. Maybe some software that can read and convert... :-)

Thanks

Hmmm. If you have MapSourse, it should run on your PC. I run it on the nav computer in two versions - V5.x (i think) for real time GPS navigation and the latest for planning and viewing while at anchor. I also run nRoute which is free from Garmin and works with the BlueCharts as well. It's actually better in some ways than MapSource while underway. GPS is an $80 GPS18x USB.

Not probably but exactly...

I wonder how to handle the Austrian charts as they have besides the IENC files also update files and a file with 'schifffahrtspolizeilichen Daten' or 'shipping police data'.
Aparently you can process update files in SeeMyEnc, but what about the 'shipping police data' and how to do this in OpenCPN??

Questions, questions...

Gerard,
the updates should be applied automatically - just unpack them to the same folder as the original charts.
The Austrian approach to the charts is a little bit "special" as discussed in http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...cpn-35193.html and currently the quilting algorythm is not very happy about them. I believe Dave will have some time to get back to it when the other more important quilting problems are sorted out.

I've read it, but it is too much 'dev-speak' for me to understand...

From what I understand from the release notes on the download site they will update the charts 1st half year 2010.

Just to clarify: You will have to process the updates in SeeMyEnc or download the updates manually, there is no such mechanism in opencpn

Gerard,

I don't know of any free charts but I have found a book with good, recent charts. It is title "Die Donau" . How is your German? Are you planning on going all the way to the Black Sea?

Well, there are excellent free ecdis charts for free from the Danube, exept for the German part of the Danube.
As well as the rest of Germany, these are only sold by commecial parties.
I've been to Ruse (km 500) and Belene (km 570) in Bulgaria this year alrady...
That's enough for now...
The book from your link, I have 2 similar books already.
Interesting stuff to read.

Morze, mapy

There's a few non-calibrated north sea charts on this Polish site, since I don't speak Polish I'm not sure where they're from & whether its legal etc..

CM93 2009 fulll merged set is available

search (google) C-MAP 93V2 may 2009
Download the iso file
Unpack the ISO
You then have 3 folders with the:
CM93 area 1-2 (europe)
CM93 area 3-5-6-7 (rest of world)
CM93 area 8 (usa)
You can merge these folders with the copy command under Vista into a new CM93-2009 folder (ignore duplicate files).
You then have the best current complete worldwide CM93 set

Good luck

Swedish Hydrographica charts

I have tried to use a test example chart they have for testing on their web page.
It comes up as a red outlines square and it seems ok, but after clicking into it the rectangles below disappears and it all turn blank and the red frame/outline disappear.
Hydrographica claims that their charts should work with OpenCPN, but I am not so sure about that. Anyone managed to use them ?
I run the stable 1.3.6 under Ubuntu on a eee (and some test installation on a Virtual 32 bit Ubuntu 10.04 under Virtualbox, hosted by 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04.). A lot of other maps perform fine, both raster (BSB/KAP) and CM93.

Maybe 1.3.6 does not support the BSB and KAP formats from Hydrographica ?

Regards,
Ole
