The POI vision per se really is exciting.. with an open layer and various sources, the licence of the data shouldn't matter so much (as it wouldn't actually become an integral part of OpenCPN).
KML is exciting since there are already lots of google earth overlays available in this format. Having said that, GPX would really suffice I suppose..

The WMS interface as used by the Norwegian Coast Guard is REALLY interesting.
If OpenCPN could be made compatible with WMS,then various free chart data could be collectede from multiple sources simultaneously, using nautical chart data overlaid street map data with or without transparency. Direct downloads of charts from the owners could be made prior to departure for the cruising area intended to enable chart access when not connected to the internet. Something similar to the dowload of .grib files for later display in OpenCPN. Perhaps the WMS system could also be used to download the ActiveCaptain data? However, this is a job for the experts with the know how,I am just making wild suggestions.....

Dave,
OpenCPN 136 is looking really good.
However, IMHO, POI integration is just fluff! Another idea of the moment.
Please don't let it distract from the development of OpenCPN as a navigational tool. The implementation of chart orientation controls and KML integration will go a long way towards making OpenCPN more useful for navigation.
Thanks,
Paul

Here's a very nifty OpenSource project from Germany in beta stage development.
You have to make available the original bitmap in .png and a CHARTCAL.DIR from MapCal. The rest is done automatically by the 'Chartconvert' utility.
Download the ChartConverter.rar as well as the chartconvert.exe here:
Place all files in a separate directory:'chartconverter'
Best of all,the converted chart also work with SeaClear and Shipplotter but not as yet with Fugawi ENC.

Good find Tore,
It doesn't work for me on my new Win7 computer though, I get a:
"Program can't start due to missing MSVCR70.dll, try to reinstall app."
Have you got a link to a developer site, email address to the author or the like?

The creator of 'Chartconverter' is following this thread and will make his identity known if he wishes to do so. I think we should respect his privacy.

As the Chartconverter is now able to create .kap charts compatible with OpenCPN,SeaClear and Shipplotter, I would very much like to also have it compatible with Fugawi Marine ENC. The chart is not rejected when loaded but simply does not display? The chart info is available from the Fugawi menu. What is missing?

Welcome to the closed source world!!!
Who knows what Fugawi is picky about? SeaClear is particular with the line Let's find out what Fugawi cares about.
I don't have access to Fugawi for testing, but comparing the headers on Fugawi Charts and comparing with headers from charts created with charts that has been converted with the help of MapCal (Dan/Marco) I notice that two lines are missing
Try to add these two lines, and see what happens!
Don't forget to run "bsbfix".
Fugawi charts runs without problems on OpenCPN.

If chartconverter is open source, can I get to the source? Not being a windows user, a linux version would be nice!

I've noticed there are some users from (or originally from) northern europe / scandinavia. I'm wondering what kind of charts you are using. On my old PC I've been using an old version of fugawi, can I migrate those charts and use them in OpenCPN?
If that won't work, what are my options? Mostly interested in charts covering the swedish archipelago (westcoast), but dreaming and planning might require more charts ...
Best Regards,
Jakobsson
