Dan..
To tell you the truth I have never used it in anger... but installed the plug-in some time ago. Glad you find it useful.

r.fairman..
That looks great, how exactly did you do it? Use Gimp? Did you also convert to .kap?

I captured using a program called Snagit which allows you to save in a lot of file formats. In Snagit you can also assign a color as transparent which i did to the land area. I then overlaid the gif image over the area in GE and manually adjusted it to fit. I then saved the image from GE to a jpg and then use GE2 kap to create the kap file. I just used the create kap part of th program GE2Kap not the overlay kap feature. As Chartconvert converts any captured file to a tif to be processed by tif2bsb any transparency would be lost

GE2KAP is in fact the fastest and maybe best program to create KAP files from chart images (jpg, gif etc.) because you can visually adjust the chart on top of GE and then automatically use the built-in geo-coordinates from GE to create geo-referenced KAP-files. MapCal only accepts lan/lon entries with great uncertainty in correctness.
I wonder if a plugin to OCPN of this functionality would appeal to somebody to programme it :-)

Agree with you,but I am asking Paul to add,as an alternative,an overlay in .gif with a transparent land area plus the geo refs of two diagonal map corners. This option will allow the creation of an overlaid .kap map where the CM93 and the GE maps both have the same 100% opacity. The corner geo locs as well as the scale can easily be noted from the CM93 map area displayed via OpenCPN.
The land area of the CM93 map can easily be made transparent in either Gimp2 or Snagit9 and saved as a .gif file.

Re my #923..
The new GE2KAP interface could look something like this....

Re my #923
Paul will be working on the alternative to also include selected CM93 chart in .gif format with transparent land areas as soon as he can find the time. See adjusted interface attached.

re. Google Earth..
HOW do you save the overlaid area in it's full zoomed in size?
GE seems to save only the present screen view and resolution and a later viewing of the resulting file only shows a screenfull.
I have found no other way than saving the full size overlay in tiles for later re-assembly kalibration and conversion to .kap. Surely there must be a way to save the full size map in it's original scale for konversion by GE2KAP?

As a test,I calibrated and converted the attached .kap map for Lindesnes (S.Norway) stretching over two laptop screens.
1. A large GE background was captured in Firefox using Google Maps for FSX and Screengrab plug-in.
2. Displaying the same area/scale in OpenCPN using CM93,I captured the available screen area in OpenCPN twice, one under the other and joined them together.
3. Using Gimp2 I converted the CM93 map to a 127 col. .gif file and entered transparency to all land areas before saving the .gif.
4. Loading the large GE background map,I then opened the CM93 map as layers and used the 'Gimp2' tools to zoom and adjust to fit the GE map and saved as a .png.
5. Used 'MapCalII' and a CM93 map open in OpenCPN in order to calibrate the map and finally used 'Chartconvert' to produce the end .kap chart.
I did the same with a large Google Map background as you see below.
The result is an overlaid .kap chart larger than the screen with no need for further tiling.

Fantasticcally well done! I sail there every year and so appreciate the chart improvement.
Now how to automate the process?
Good luck.

Hi Peter..
Yes I noticed from previous messages that you are a frequent visitor to my home waters.
Paul is working on automating the process from GE2KAP but so far you can only overlay opaque .kap charts on Google Earth. He is working on a way to be able to optionally overlay a transparent CM93 screendump in .gif format.
What we also need is a way to automate the process of creating 'outsize' .kap charts in order to avoid multiple tiling. The method mentioned in my #927 works very well but takes a little effort and good knowledge of Gimp2, and provided you don't have too many charts to convert.
I had a great trip from Norway down the East coast of Denmark and through the Kiel canal to Borkum and the Friesian islands. You can see photos from the cruise here: Page 17

Hi def jpg for use in GE2KAP
I decided to stress test the original version of GE2Kap not the beta version. I used a trial version of a program Google satellite map Retriever which created 696 tiles at a high zoom level (altitude of 700m)over a wide area of Google Earth The program created combined bmp file. I converted this to a jpg for use by GE2 KAP Jpg file was 30 MB I then set the view in GE to match the area captured. GE2KAP worked flawlessly and created a kap file of about 37MB. This I opened in OpenCPN which allowed me to zoom to the max zoom possible in GE over a wide area. I have been told that Google hates this type of tiling program as it ties up server time. I wait the Google police at my door.

Update
Just as an update to my previous post A zoomed view in GE to save as a jpg covers a width of 0.5 mile. Using the tiling program the width is 5 miles at the same zoom level.

r.fairman
Have you tried Google Maps for FSX running in Firefox with the 'Screengrab' plug-in?
Far quicker and easy to use when grabbing large GE or GM areas.
OK,you can only select either 1600 x 1200 or 3200 x 2400 size at the moment but it is usually sufficient. No need for tiling, bitmap ready immediately.
Wish I had a similar utility to grab outsize CM93 maps from OpenCPN (or other prog)
