Can't install OpenCpn 5.2 on Mac 10.13

Hi All, I have been running OpenCPN on several different Mac products but I cannot get the latest OpenCPN to run on a 2010 Mac Mini running the latest version of High Sierra.

Even if OpenCPN 5.2 is now a *.pkg (installation-) file it is not signed with a developer ID however. So there are needed supplementary steps to be able to install it on a Mac. Normally the Gatekeeper does not allow to install unsigned software. Perhaps someone can describe step by step what have been done to circumvent the Gatekeeper...

That is quite easy: at opening the new App push <ctrl> and double click, then confirm <open> - this registers the app as an exception within the security settings and from than on the app can be opened like any other with double click.

what cpu is inside your Mac Mini?
MacTracker says the 2010 models are the last generation with Core2Duo, from 2011 on they built in Core I5 and Core I7 cpu's.

If the problem is a different Intel CPU only then the developer compiling OpenCPN for Mac has made an error with the compiler settings. These Mac users should try to compile OpenCPN themselfs to circumvent the problem.

In order to confirm the above findings I installed 5.2.0 on my Core I5 Macbook and it works at once. From my perspective this proves, that we have a compatibility issue with former Intel Procs, namely Core2Duo.



If this is because of a wrong compiler setting, then the solution should be to correct the compiler setting and offer a new version for download. I'm not familiar with forwarding bug-reports to the developers on Github - maybe somebody can give advice...

I have had a look at the OpenCPN.app bundle opening it with right click and "Show BundleContents". There are several issues not conforming with Apple guidelines.
- In /Contents/Frameworks I see symbolic links for the wxWidgets dylibs. Why? That is unusual.
- In /Contents/Resources I see 2 folders for german language files: de.lproj and de_DE.lproj. Why? This is also very unusually.
- In /Contents/SharedSupport/plugins/ there are supplemental data files for plugins. It is not preferred by Apple guidelines to keep such files in the app bundle. They should be either in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenCPN/ or better in ~/Library/Preferences/opencpn/plugins/ where I keep them in my own OpenCPN version.
- The file /Contents/Info.plist contains importand informations to run the app by the operating system. However most informations I see there in the official OpenCPN version are missing or wrong. This is also a possible reason the app crashes at certain maschines.

I know they are looking for some smart MacOS coders who coincidently are native German speakers

There have been several Mac coders in the developer team. But they all have leaved. I do not know why?

So there are real possibilities for you out there and get famous. Instead of just yelling from the sideline, do something about it!

I do not need to become famaous.
I do not need to do something about it because I have a very well working own version of OpenCPN which is quite different to the public official version.
