BR24 without a Chartplotter?

For the folks with BR24 experience:

At a recent boat show I talked to the local Navico representative about using the Lowrance BR24 with OpenCPN. He claimed that it would not work without being connected to one of the Navico-family chart plotters.

Does this mean that the BR24 Plugin will not work unless I buy an expensive (and otherwise useless to me) chartplotter? Or was that just sales talk?

No, you don't need it, just the radar scanner.

If you've OCPN, some installed charts, a compass heading into the system and the BR24Radar_pi plugin you can use either of Navico's scanners; BR24, 3G and 4G. (Lowrance and Simrad are also trade names for the same gadget.
There's also a OCPN plugin for the Garmin 18(I think it's called that)
