Boat Symbol Always Pointing North

My boat symbol always points north no matter what the course is. I'm running a Garmin GPSMap 420 in simulation mode, north up in the OpenCPN settings.

OpenCPN version 2.1.0, Windows XP SP2.

Is this due to the simulation mode of the GPS? I tried simulation in Maxsea and it wasn't a problem. In Seaclear however, the same problem occurs.

Boat Symbol

In simulation mode the Garmin GPS does not send out the satellite fix code. Without this code navigation software will assume no fix and not plot a position or orientate the boat symbol
