Ron,
you must not look under Bluetooth in computer properties but under Ports (Com&Lpt) to find the correct serial port number of your Bluetooth GPS. It should use the Serial-Port-Protocol (SPP) to emulate a virtual serial port.

If you use the delivered software of your GPS and try to connect it at the same time to OpenCPN then the connection will fail because the port can only be used once.

Thank you for your reply, maybe I didn't go into too much detail
1. I am using the Dell and the Asus but not both at the same time, I am aware of the limitations of SPP.
2. Upon looking at the ports (COM&LPT) in Device Manager, both Computers are showing the same thing,
'Standard Serial over Bluetooth link (COM3)'
'Standard Serial over Bluetooth link (COM4)'.
Both computers have exactly the same properties, listed under Device Manager when clicking on the ports and associated tabs.
3. I am not using any software other than what is supplied with windows,
the only difference I see is in the bluetooth settings which is why I focused on that. On speaking with the ASUS SIG they are looking at the windows Registries to ensure that device ID'S are up to date etc.
Though I have been all over both computers with a fine tooth comb, ensuring that every setting is the same I am still nonplussed as to why OpenCPN works on the Dell but not on the ASUS yet SeaClearII works on both machines and why does a second com port (COM3) open up automatically when only one is specified (COM4) in OpenCPN settings.

Ron,

you might give the latest beta a try - install in parallel if you like so.
There are is a lot of stuff that has changed in the Com handling in the meantime.

Bluetooth under Windows has given some headaches/head scratching all the time though....

To be very clear: Bluetooth in OpenCPN 3.2.2 has some known problems.

We would appreciate a comparative test of the latest Beta, Version 3.3.2118.

Unfortunately not good news, downloaded OpenCPN 3.3.2118 in parallel mode and there is exactly the same symptom, tried enabling, disabling, switching the ports around where Com3 would be outgoing and Com4 incoming, installing ports removing ports, couple of small things I noticed, when adding ports, the descriptor for the second port was missing e.g. added com4 and the descriptor showed Serial Link over Bluetooth yet when adding port 3 this was missing and vice versa also either Com3 or Com 4 was removed on the Dell the GS BT821C would not connect, which is why I am adding the port, under OpenCpn 3.3.2 the second port was added automatically. I am sure the Bluetooth works (hardware wise) as photos, documents, and MP3 files can be shared both ways. Is anyone else who is running Bluetooth under Windows 7 or 8 having similar problems, there is one other thing to try and that is to load OpenCPN in windows 32 bit program files on the Dell (which works great) so will try tonight as OpenCPN is currently running in Program Files(x86), also the descriptor is still missing in Bluetooth settings, com ports, on the ASUS whereas it is there under the Dell, so am leaning more and more towards a windows registry error.

2 things:

1. Do not be too concerned about the COM3(input) port coming and going. In this case, the terms input and output refer only to which side of the link initiates the pairing. OpenCPN is always the initiator, so we use the "output" port (COM4) only. Really unfortunate terminology chosen by Microsoft, here....

2. It would be useful to compare the OpenCPN logfiles of the two machines. You will probably see a serial port failure reported on the ASUS machine, and none on the Dell. Please confirm this.

Hello Dave, as for Com3 here is my experience, (bearing in mind I also understand the windows nomenclature), while running OpenCPN 3.2.2 on the Dell windows 8.1 64 bit, I was watching my GPS and dashboard showing lots of satellites, upon clicking the remove for COM3 the satellites on the dash disappeared and the GPS went into an acquire mode, upon reinitializing the OpenCPN with only COM4 the computer would not communicate with the Bluetooth/GPS, only after adding COM3 and restarting OpenCPN was communication with the Bluetooth/GPS resumed.

This is confusing to me. OCPN should need only the one (output) port defined in the connections list.

Can you please post another screenshot, of your OpenCPN options->Connections setup, both working and non-working?

How exactly do you have COM3 (Input) configured?

Com 3 is configured as Incoming on the Windows Buetooth settings,
however this morning tried (just for the heck off it) turning on the ASUS and seeing what would happen, opened OpenCPN 3.3.2118 and IT WORKED, I was absolutely dumbfounded, closed OpenCPN 3.3.2118 and opened 3.3.2 and IT WORKED, haven't touched anything, tried anything, altered anything, up/downloaded anything updated anything, have turned the tablet off/on and it still works, tried tuning the Dell on/off/on and the ASUS still works, shut the ASUS down and the Dell (OpenCPN 3.3.2) worked, from my notes yesterday I tried everything and OpenCPN did not fail.
Have both devices configured with only COM4 as outgoing and have not tried reconfiguring COM3, (why tempt fate, if it ain't broke, don't fix it syndrome).
The only stipulation I can see is that the bluetooth transmitter must be turned on prior to opening OpenCPN as there is a six second 'acquire' timeout in windows, this is a leftover from the old IBM 3780 bi-sync protocol from which SPP is configured,
Do not know what was going on however for right now everything is operating the way it should,
Thank you so much for your help and will send the info on COM3 as soon as confidence level builds.

Hi....
Right off I should say thank you, this software is fantastic beyond what I could have ever hoped for....
Naturally this led me to want it to do more (theres something wrong with me!).
So, what I did was connect my cellphone to OpenCPN 3.3.2222 as a GPS receiver via BlueTooth, not only did I get it to work, it works very very well so far.
Heres my question, in my exuberance I made an account on the OpenCPN website and then made the first Wiki entry I have ever made detailing the process I used to do this thinking it might be helpful to others.
Did I do this right, and is it in the right place if I did?
