Out of interest, and I know you say that you're a PC user not Apple (couldn't agree more); but why not try an IPAD2? They start at $500, and seem to be everything you want (except for PC)...

Has anyone used these? Comes in at $220, and looks like it has everything except a decent sized hard drive - which is not so important if you're not storing movies....!

I am afraid you will not find any free navigation soft for Android nor iPad. At last OpenCPN does not run with these.
Hopefully this will change in the future.

I use a emachines netbook, 10.1 screen, 1 gig ram. 160 gb hd, running XP and use Opencpn and cm93 charts + others. Connected to gps dongle and NASA AIS engine 3. Covered about 6000 miles last year.

Whole lot including dedicated AIS stubby antenna with 5 metre cable cost approx £350 ($500 US). battery life is about 3-4 hours, so have both a 12v power lead and a small (70w) inverter - power draw is less than 20w.

More than happy with it and portable from boat to boat.

toughpad - used .... no wifi - and not too much memory..... but not $5000 as you feared.

Thanks. Well, for one reason we wish to continue running OpenCPN so our choices are Ubuntu (Linux) and Windows. Either one would suit us
