Beacon/buoy sizes : Chart Colours ??

Hi,
I am new to the Forum - and not particularly good with computer applications.

Earlier this year I purchased "France - Chart Set 2021 - Version 2021-9" and installed it on my PC (Windows7) and also my laptop (Windows 10), both running OpenCPN 5.2.4 6b314e6.

Generally works well and very impressive, but I have a couple of queries :-

1. Can I make the navigation marks/beacons/buoys bigger ?

2. Can I adjust the colours shown on the chart

On my PC the chart colours are :

Land - Yellow
Between Tides - Green
Shallow Water - Darker Blue
Deeper Water - Lighter Blue
Deep Water - White.

On my laptop :-

Land - Light brown

Between Tides - Grey

Shallow Water - Pale Blue

Deeper Water - Pale grey?

Deep Water - White.

I prefer the colours on my PC, but cannot find a way to duplicate them on my laptop.

Many thanks for any advice.

I can't help you with the OpenCPN part, although I use it to navigate.

The color issue could be either you color setting in Windows or the capability of the screen in your PC. There is a bit of color adjustment available in Windows; I ran into it when trying to get the computer screen to match my printer (also adjustable) colors.

I also have a monitor, the one at the helm, that refuses to duplicate the colors on the PC that runs OpenCPN.

Thinking about it some more, they color problem is very likely to be in the PC or the monitor screen, because the color information being tranmitted is the same in both cases.

Re: Beacon/buoy sizes : Chart Colours ??

Howard, for the chart colour:-
go to:- Opencpn
S57 data
chartsybols.xml
Open the chartsymbols.xml file and look for:-
color name ``LANDA``
for me the colour is:- <color name="LANDA" r="215" g="205" b="122"/>

for the Swedish type color:-
<color name="LANDA" r="255" g="239" b="132"/>

See if that fits for you?

For the scale factor, you have to go to User Interface and play with slider bar for adjustent:-
go to:- Tools, Options, User interface, chart object scale factor.
Have a good day.

Re: Beacon/buoy sizes : Chart Colours ??

Many thanks P Dub and others for such quick replies. Amazing!!

I have now sorted the marks/beacon/ buoys size, following your lead.

Regarding the chart colours, I have no programming or other computor skills to speak of.

So, where do I find - "S57 data... chartsybols.xml .... Open the chartsymbols.xml file" etc. ? to get started.

Is it from within the running OpenCPN program - or do I approach it from somewhere else.?

Sorry to be so dense, but I haven't got a clue.

Cheers
HJ

I assume you are in Windows.
Go to the root directory of your computer:-
C: in X86 file program
OpenCpn
S57data
chartsymbols.xml
open it with blocs-note
find <color name="LANDA"
change it for this one, keep note of the other one.
see if that fits for you.
<color name="LANDA" r="215" g="205" b="122"/>

Many thanks for your further advice.

I have played around with the LANDA ( and other) numbers with interesting results. It's still a mystery why the colours vary considerably from on computer (PC) to another (laptop) - but that's all part of the fun, I suppose.

I will continue to experiment and learn - until the day, (one Day?) when I can go sailing again.

Regards
HJ

If you post a screenshot from both your machines we should probably be able to tell. There is no explanation for what you see if you are using same charts and same settings on both the machines.

Re: Beacon/buoy sizes : Chart Colours ??

Thanks everyone for your help and guidance.

It is surprising how different the chart colours are between my PC and my laptop

I am now well into <chartsymbols.xm> and I now have most of the chart colours ok.

But I am still plagued with the foreshore (between tides) area showing Grey on my laptop.

Does someone know the colour name for this layer in the listing in <chartsymbols.xml> ?

If I can identify this layer, I can convert it to an appropriate RGB shade of green.

Thanks again,
HJ

It is not a good idea to fiddle with chartsymbols.xml. Which version of this file you will use later for which machine? Don't do that.
If the colours of your machines are different it is either the different setting, the different OS or the different graphic.

DEPIT. For example
Code:
<!-- Intertidal area -->
                        <color name="DEPIT" r="152" g="200" b="0"/>

Yep DEPIT was the one. Now a nice shade of green to match UK Admiralty charts. I'm feeling much better now !!

Thanks to all

No, there are standards like ECDIS or Chart n° 1.

The colors for ECDIS are only recommended and not something compulsory. Further more are oudated (the computer are more performing than 20 years ago).
Have a good day.
