Bad SENC file?

Yesterday and this morning I was unable to start Opencpn successfully. Yesterday I downloaded some Belgian Inland charts to see if there were depths, using Chart Downloader. Then added the Belgian Inland path, and made a Belgain group. I selected that Group, but I could not find the charts even though there was a chart database update that completed. Thinking nothing of it, I closed Opencpn and the next time I started OpenCPN it failed. The log file ended at a Belgian senc file.

I tried deleting that file, and starting O but that did not work, so I restored it.

Then I tried just letting it sit and think and after a long time US inland came up for some reason, but it was stilll busy and I got impatient and clicked something and O went into not responding.

The next try was to rename the opencpn.ini file. OpenCPN started fine making its own new ini file. There were no charts yet as I had not redefined the paths etc. I closed.

Deleted that ini and renamed the old one back to opencpn.ini. Then I renamed the SENC folder (5gb) as SENC.old and made a new SENC.
Then I restarted Opencpn. OpenCPN is now busy recreating the Database so I don't know if this has fixed it yet.

Does anyone know what might have happened?

Thanks

Re: Bad SENC file?

So now the program has gone through the full database and the blue spinner is still working with OpenCPN saying "not responding"

I will leave it there for a long time to see what happens.

Re: Bad SENC file?

I started over. OpenCPN seemed to hung.
Now the chart database is successfully rebuilt, but there are several log files ending with
C:\ProgramData\opencpn\SENC\D0C160883B3D_3UABUOYS. S57

So this file seems to be a problem. What should I do? The senc's were being created, not read.

Okay Okay, now it is creating SENC FILES. I guess I just have to wait.

I think the switch to automatically create all SENC file on start, must be on. I do not recall having set that. After this finishes I will find it and turn it off.

Re: Bad SENC file?

It finished making SENC, but there are a bunch of errors:

1:56:46 PM: Warning 1: For feature "DYKCON", attribute "OBJNAM" ignored, not in expected schema.

Like this. Is it possible that my Chart path name directory got corrupted with mulltiple entries?

Re: Bad SENC file?

Now it purged unused files and is loading plugins, but this is happening very slowly.
Something is amiss.

and opencpn is showing "not responding" but I just have to wait for it to respond.

There is no doubt that I have a corrupted opencpn.ini file and that the problem is with charts I think.

But what exactly?

Re: Bad SENC file?

1. Copied Chartdownloader section to another document and left empty.
2. Organized the Chart Directory Section, removed duplicates and removed some unused chart directories. Renumbered.

3. Removed the unused chart directories under Chart folder on the drive.
4. Reorganized Chart Groups the way I want them and removed all references to no longer existing charts. Renumbered.
5. Saved the ini and tried O.
6. O loaded quickly.
7. Did a database rebuild. Tried each group.

8. Had a crash because somewhere there is a reference to a non-existant chart file.
9. I think cleaning up the file directories, removing unused chart files, cleaning up chart groups helped, but the final thing that seems to have made it better is a final database rebuild, because I had no file directories referencing deleted files.

I notice that the order I imposed in the chart directory list is not maintained by opencpn. Folders that are touched or scanned simply get added back to the bottom I think. This makes it harder to keep track of things, but there is no problem with reordering the directories again when you need to, and renumbering.

Re: Bad SENC file?

Then next in the txt file of chartdownloader settings that I had saved:

I separated each Chart Downloader record, organized it and then unseparated at the "|" the records (each record has 3 fields)

Once ordered the way I wanted, deleting old stuff etc, I reconnected the records at the "|" and pasted it into the opencpn.ini file. Then loaded Opencpn and went to the Chartdownloader and found the Chartdownloader records looked right and worked. Plus they were in the order I wanted.

I wonder how long?
