AtoN weather info

Some AtoN AIS stations do also transmit weather info. Mind you no forecast but current local weather at that station. Tidal info might also be available.

Would it be good to have such data available in OpenCPN, and if yes how.

A few examples of other chart programs added. Please comment.

Re: AtoN weather info

Is there a standardized way to report weather data? https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=AISMessage21 does not indicate so.
So only way could be to add column in AIS target list showing all information received which is not formally defined.
Maybe this should not be limited to AtoN's

Re: AtoN weather info

Have you tried Options->Ships->AIS Targets-> Display -> Show area notices (from AIS binary messages) ?

This is something different. The area notice is specified as 1, 22 (DAC, FI) while meteo is 1, 31. (See Application Specific Messages collection | e-Navigation Netherlands )

Re: AtoN weather info

Kind of related, I'm currently adding support in the TwoCan plugin for the additional NMEA2000 PGN's that support AIS.

At present in aisdecoder.cpp only Area Code 1, Function Code 22 (Area Notices) and Area Code 200, Function Code 10 (Inland Waterways, Static & Voyage Data) are supported.

Are there plans to extend aisdecoder.cpp for additional message types ? At present I only support AIS Message Types 1,2,3,4,5,9,18,19 & 24 and have not worried about Message Type 8 (Binary Broadcasts).

For Message Type 8 (Binary Broadcast) the other Area Code 1, Function Codes that may be of interest include:
"VTS generated synthetic targets" 17
"Marine traffic signal" 19
"Weather observation from ship" 21
"Extended ship static and voyage related data" 24
"Environmental" 26
"Meteorological and Hydrographic data" 31
"Tidal window" 32

I found the field descriptions for most of the above in an IMO document 2010-IMO-SN.1-Circ.289

There's also https://www.iala-aism.org/ , https://www.iala-aism.org/asm/ for example, but have you AIS packets captures? Without actual data for testing, adding them is next to useless.

Re: AtoN weather info

For AIS message types, not really a problem. Firstly IALA/IMO have publically documented AIS messages very well and secondly, for NMEA0183 VDM/VDO sentences there are enough samples around to verify message parsing although perhaps not enough of the different Binary Messages.

My problem however is with NMEA2000. Firstly the standard is not publically documented so I have had to rely on Canboat, Openskipper and my own reverse engineering to parse the NMEA2000 PGN's. Secondly, at least with respect to AIS and DSC data, I have few if any samples.

If any OpenCPN users have NMEA2000 AIS transceivers or VHF radios, I would greatly appreciate some sample logs.
