As an alternative approach you could get a Quark QK-A026 AIS receiver with built in WiFi and NMEA input for under $100. No need for installing any software. Just connect your tablet to the QK-A026's WiFi and you will get AIS, GPS and NMEA data streamed into OpenCPN. I cannot vouch for the NMEA feature as I have not used it but the AIS and GPS over WiFi work great for me.
