Android ´extGPS´app for OpenCPN

Although most of us have a dedicated GPS on board,it is useful to know that you can also,in an emergency,use your Android phone (with GPS) to supply OpenCPN with the required NMEA data and port via bluetooth.

If your laptop does not have bluetooth you can purschase a simple USB bluetooth device for around $ 10 or less.. Works like magic!!

Hi!
I see that this post is old, but it seems to me that if you could get it to work in 2012 I should be able to get it to work in 2014 now that OpenCPN has support for Bluetooth.
Have you got any instructions on accomplishing this?

I got it working!
Not with extGPS but with a beta app called GPS Over BT, I took some screwing about but it WORKS!
I now have a 17 inch chartplotter... All I need to do now is download charts for the entire world.
I feel like I'm living beyond my means a bit!

If anyone wants to know how to do this let me know, I think I could do it again and I am fairly sure that it will be a LOT easier the second time.

I tried several similar apps on my Android phone a couple years ago, and GPS Over BT was the only one that worked reliably for me. I keep it on my phone as a backup in case my primary GPS stops working.

By the way, an Andriod app called GPS Status by Mobwia speeds up Gps search 10x on my samsung S4. Maybe they make a similar app for windows?
