Android and Radar overlay?

Does the (paid) Android version of the app support radar overlay (garmin?) like the Raspbian version does? I can't seem to see a plugin for it and have refreshed the plugin list ... I suppose the faxct that the plugin is called "radar pi" might be a clue that it doesn't ... but, thought I would check.

Re: Android and Radar overlay?

rszemeti...
The radar overlay plugin is not supported under Android.
Basic reason: The data flow requirements for radar integration are difficult to achieve on a typical 2,4 Ghz Android wifi connection. Further, if achievable, the resulting battery life of the device may be problematic.

There may be a possibility of using compression, caching, skipped frames, etc. to get sufficient data bandwidth to the Android device for some sort of radar overlay functionality. But this has not be studied in detail.

Sorry
Dave

Re: Android and Radar overlay?

As I would be running Android on the same Pi 5, over the same WiFi connection as I run Raspbian, fed from the same 12V supply on the N2K backbone I am not sure why it would be a problem.

However, if it doesn't exist, it doesn't exist and converting the plugin to Java is beyond my talents.

I shall keep looking for another solution then. Ideally I want to run Navionics (for the mapping quality and route entry) ... and OpenCPN for the radar overlay when I want to work out what is happening in the murk ahead!

I currently have OpenCPN running on a Pi 5 below deck, and the stabilised radar display works great. I have a new open source plotter (1100+ nits, water proof, Pi5 compute module) ... trying to decide whether to run Raspbian or Android on it ... currently running Android and Navionics runs a treat, but it would be good to have the Garmin radar overlayed on OpenCPN too .. maybe I'll have to look at a dual-boot solution.

And I should of course, add my thanks for the Raspbian version of the plugin Dave, works a treat!

As Dave mentioned. The radar scanner data traffic needs a wired IP connection. The standard wifi protocol doesn't support this kind of data transfer and since a normal Android doesn't have a IP-cable, RJ45, connection radar_pi is not available there.
I've a few RPi4/5 and my Navico radar works good. In the boat still a dated Win10 though

Re: Android and Radar overlay?

If you check the code for the plugin, you'll see it is just a standard UDP multicast which works as expected over WiFi.

Code:
socket = startUDPMulticastReceiveSocket(m_interface_addr, m_report_addr, error);

There are issues if you have too many devices on the WiFi network as multicast gets sent to them all individually, but generally, a single device is not a problem.

Dave mentioned it was a bandwidth problem, not a protocol issue.
