AIS targets not working in Android version 5.0

I am using opencpn on both MAC OS and android. I receive GPS and AIS data over wifi from a Vespar AIS transponder.

On the Android devices, the AIS is intermittent. It will work for hours or days and then stop working for hours or days.

I see this on a Pixel 2, Pixel 3, and Samsung tablet all running the latest Android releases. One device will often be working while the others are not.

The MAC laptop works fine consistently.

I should point out this behavior was seen in the previous Android release. It is not something new in 5.0

I assume you are using UDP. Are you sending to a broadcast IP address?

In UDP there can be several places a packet gets dropped. Does OpenCPN connections debug screen show any messages coming from AIS? If not then it’s probably not an O issue. O just opens a socket and awaits incoming messages. If the IP stack doesn’t deliver them then O can’t do much about it.

However, if O shows AIS messages in the connections debug window then we can probably find the problem.

I am using TCP.

I see AIVDM messages in the debug window.

But no targets are shown. My samsung stopped a few days ago and is not working.

One of my phones is working again, the other not.

All have AIVDM messages

What color are the AIVDM messages?

Re: AIS targets not working in Android version 5.0

Looking more,

On the Samsung device the AIVDM messages are there, but no targets shown

On the Pixel phone, I have GPS messages but no AIS messages which looks like a different problem. This is strange. Why only the AIS messages getting dropped?

If you open the AIS targets list are any targets listed?

Check to be sure the maximum distance to target option is set to a large number like 10 thousand nautical miles.

The messages are green, just like the GPS messages

Yes they are shown in the list!

But not displayed. My max target distance is set to a small number.

Re: AIS targets not working in Android version 5.0

The pad is working; yes somehow that toggle turned off. Thanks!

The pixel 2 and pixel3 phones still have issues. The debugging window shows GPS sentences but not AIS. Yet My pad and Macintosh get both, all from the same source

Perhaps an Android bug?

With TCP it is possible that only one device can connect and get data. It all depends on how the server is configured. That’s why I try to use UDP broadcast. It is easier to set up and does not have any restrictions on number of listeners.

Can you look at the log file for the various devices and see why that say about making the TCP connection to the server?

Re: AIS targets not working in Android version 5.0

I will check the logs but don't think that is the issue.
Vespar indicates up to 5 devices may connect.
At this moment Have a Mac, a windows PC, and my tablet connected just fine.
Only the phones have issues.
Will take a look and see if there is a log on the vespar host ..
