ais receiver and openCPN
Hello,
I need your help since I would like to buy an AIS receiver working with open CPN via a notebook.
I am hesitating between NASA MARINE ENGINE 3 and DIGITAL YACHT AIS100 USB. What I would like to know is firstly whether they are both compatible with open CPN and, secondly, which of the two would you suggest buying.
Thank you for your time

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
NASA outputs only serial data at 38400 Baud. No USB. But it can take another NMEA input at 4800 Baud (GPS) and multiplex it into a single output stream.
DY outputs USB and takes no inputs other than from the antenna.
This can make some difference, depending on the rest of the setup you already have or are planning to install. For a simple laptop with a USB GPS puck adding the DY via USB will be more straightforward...

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
The DY AIS100 Pro Receiver (NMEA+USB) can take 0183 and multiplex as well
In my opinion this would be a smarter choice. Don't know the price difference

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
Hi ,
I had to make the choice last year and finally got the AdvanSea RX100 - a small, reliable and smart device which supplies USB and serial connection and is able to multiplex other data. Submits both class A and B AIS data. Works fantastic with OpenCPN.
ciao,
Stefan

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
Take a look at the offerings from Comar Systems such as this one and its cousins. I have installed a couple and had no problems.

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
I'm using an SR-161 and it works great. I merged the data from my EverMore SA-320 GPS puck and connected it into a bluetooth dongle, no hard wiring at all to the notebook PC.

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
Well some happy sailors here, but me. I bought an AIS100 USB from Digital Yacht but cannot seem to make it work with opencpn on windows xp. I have read all i could about setin it up and it still does not work. There is a software on their CD that shows that the ais is on com4 and it receives some numeric data (shown in funny caracters).
I have told opencpn to use com4 but from there, nothing...
I sure could use some help from anyone that has it working on windows xp Thanks

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
If it doesn't work why not give it back to the vendor?

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
Sounds like something in OpenCPN is wrong.. Couple of things to try
1. Make sure you don't have the manufacturers software open when you are trying wiht OpenCPN. One will lock the serial port and not allow the other to see data.
2. Use the NMEA debug window in OpenCPN to see if you are getting data in.
3. Ensure you baud rate is correct in OpenCPN. 4800 is default, but most AIS devices require 38400.

Re: ais receiver and openCPN
I found a DY receiver among the goodies stashed away by the PO, I have considered using a splitter to connect it to the UHF antenna. Will the output of the UHF transmitter fry the input of the AIS receiver?
Being a former Coast Guard ET, I should know, but back then we were still using vacuum tubes.

Same comments, except I use the SR 262 (additional capability). This unit accepts data from a GPS, multiplexes it into a 38,500 baud serial signal, and goes thence to a standard laptop. OpenCPN just loves this arrangement.
