AIS on RPI not working

I switched form a windows based PC to the RPI2.
OpenCPN was built according to Pi Chart
USB "mouse" GPS on ttyUSB0 works fine and shows ship position
I have a Cypho-101 AIS which is working fine when connected to the PC via USB.
When connected to the RPI under the exact conditions I get no targets.
It seems that it is recognized by the RPI as I get a /dev/ttyUSB1 when connected however nothing comes up on OpenCPN (NMEA debug window shows GPS messages but no AIS messages).
The chipset for the USB is Prolific PL2303, which I believe is supported "out of the box" on the RPI.

Any ideas why it is not working or how should I go on with debugging this?

Re: AIS on RPI not working

Does the device show up in the drop down list of serial ports at the connections section of settings?

And be sure that no other process is using the serial port at the same time.

And when he say "no other processes" that includes any RPI diagnostic or configuration tools - kill any processes that might be running in the background.

Yes, it shows in the list, I add it and enable it.
No reason that naything else will use it - at the moment this RPI has only Opencpn running on it. But just to make sure - how do I check if any other process uses this port?

Re: AIS on RPI not working

If you disable the GPS serial port ttyUSB0, activate NMEA debug window and play around with the baud rates for AIS ttyUSB1, nothing happens?
Start with 38400 baud.

Tried to disable USB0, tried to disconnect GPS, Baud rate is 38400 (which worked with Windows and is the rate per the manual) - no message in the debug window.

Re: AIS on RPI not working (SOLVED)

It took me some time and several tests to notice - it turns out that in order for the devices to be operable they must be plugged into the RPI before power on.
Although plugging them in and out after the system is on does change their appearance or disappearance in the devices selection box, only if they were plugged during startup do they actually work.
Don't know if it is something with the OS or something with OCPN.
