AIS equipped VHF output direct to raspberry pi GPIO

Hi, Probably a dumb question... I have a Furino VHF with AIS and my main chartplotter is a raspberry pi 4b. Can i take the AIS output wires from the furino and go straight to the GPIO on the Rpi for serial? Cant seem to google up an answer...

Probably not. The serial output from the Furuno would be a RS232/422 with a to high voltage for the GPIO serial pins made for 3.3 Volt.

You better go from the Furuno NMEA0183 output via a serial to USB converter and use a RPi USB port.
