AIS Connection Android USB

Hello,

I intend to use my AIS Receicer using the USB Port of my Android Tablet (Samsung S2).
Up to now, I was not able to configure a running Serial Port for it. In the setup, a Port Number is asked, which I dont know.
Is there anybody to help me with this subject? Would be great!
(It is running well with the Windows Version on my laptop.)

Cheers

Re: AIS Connection Android USB

For a Android tablet I would use a Raspberry Pi with open plotter, connect the AIS and even also the GPS to the raspberry if the tablet don't have it's own gps and use WiFi form the Raspberry to the Android tablet, super easy and no cables connected to the Tablet.

Is there a driver of your AIS for Android? Did you ask the manufacturer?

Re: AIS Connection Android USB

There is an App from Digital Yachts which I have been using, but this App is not yet available on Play Store. Digital Yachts told me, that I have to look for solutions elsewhere or I coud by a new unit. Using OpenCpn could solve my problems, when the USB - Port is configured appropriate. (I hope)

Gerdzip...

Not meaning to talk you out of this configuration, but before huge effort, consider this:
If you interface the AIS receiver directly to the Android tablet by USB Host-mode cable, that means that the battery in your tablet may also be supplying at least some power to the AIS unit. Not good for battery life. And if the AIS receiver has no other power source, battery life could be measured in minutes....

Just for your consideration.

Now, to the technical issue:
If the USB connection to the tablet does not emulate and interface exactly as some recognized serial port, then it will not be usable for OpenCPN without creating a custom driver.

Test this by installing any of a number of serial port terminals available from the Playstore. If you install such a terminal app, and plug in the AIS receiver, set an appropriate baud rate, and then see output on the terminal screen, then OpenCPN will be able to use this device.

Please let us know how this goes.
Thanks
Dave

Re: AIS Connection Android USB

Thanks,

don't worry about the power, my AIS is using an external 12V supply.

I tried an USB Terminal App and I can see received data. The Android location is identified:
/dev/bus/usb/001/002 .

Using that String in Opencpn does not make any success.

It seems, it could be a very small step to transfer those data to opencpn, bug as this point, I have no idea.

Cheers
