AIS and CPA / TCPA

I have a weird problem in 4.6.0. AIS on OpenCPN works like a charm. Vessels on screen, tracks et cetera too. CPA/TCPA alarm works perfectly. However, both on hovering over a vessel (yes, ticked the appropriate box in Options) and on bringing up AIS details I get NO CPA and TCPA. Neither on my Mac nor on my Win10 computer.

Bummer, because Ymuiden and the North Sea are very busy high ways with large vessels zooming past at over ten knots and pilot boats at over 25 knots.

I do receive !AIVDM and !AIVDO sentences (checked in NMEA debugger window). Anyone point me in the right direction?

Your AIS settings? Did you go through the different options?

Re: AIS and CPA / TCPA

Went through settings to no avail. Made a new discovery though. I have two AIS receivers. On is a Watcheye transponder, the other is a receiver in my Standard Horizon VHF. I also have a Miniplex3 mix so I can control what goes where.

Using Watcheye data (Standard H is off) I get no CPA but I do get flashes (1 sec every now and then) of CPA lines on screen and off course the alarm works.

Using Standard H data all works like a charm. I cannot understand why other than that OpenCPN gets confused bij Watcheye data.

I have added a VDR log file while using Watcheye data.

rramsey...

Clear enough.

OCPN understands only AIVDM/AIVDO.

Never seen an AIS receiver that uses a talker ID of WEVDO/WEVDM, or anything else except AIVDO/AIVDM.

Does the Watcheye have any configuration capability to change its Talker ID?

Re: AIS and CPA / TCPA

Having two AIS sources I have configured the MUX to separate them. The Standard Horizon is SH, the Watcheye is WE. According to the documentation I read that should work fine, NMEA provides for this. I.a. "!SHVDM" and "!WEVDM".

The log I provided is one were I had the MUX block !SHxxx datastream and only let !WExxx through.

SH data streams work perfectly. WE datastreams almost but no CPA or TCPA except short flashes of CPA lines in the chart screen.By the way, it also works perfectly on my Raymarine C120W and on my iPad with iNavX.

Just can't tell if Watcheye is the problem or OpenCPN, but that is because I do not know if CPA and TCPA are passed in the data stream or calculated bij OpenCPN.

Re: AIS and CPA / TCPA

CPA and TCPA are always calculated by the plotter. The AIS receivers don't know about this concept.

And a plotter can make some decisions based on Talker IDs. There are definitions in the standard for them. So don't expect that an arbitrary TalkerID will be interpreted as you would like to see.

Re: AIS and CPA / TCPA

SO I changed the WE to AI from the Watcheye so now OpenCPN receives !AIVDM (checked it) and same result - no CPA or intermittent CPA (on my Win10 machine the AIS details window shows the CPA/TCPA a second or so every 10 or 15 seconds). But the alarms work great (in fact, the bell is driving me mad as I type this).

Now here's the thing: If the MUX sends !SHxxx from the Standard Horizon, OpenCPN works perfectly. If it sends !AIxxx from the Watcheye it fails, as it does with !WE (no difference).

My Raymarine C120W works perfectly whatever ID or Source I choose (Standard Horizon or Watcheye, SH, WE or AI). It's like OpenCPN trips over something coming from the Watcheye and as the inside of the Watcheye is from the same manufacturer in most brands of AIS I am guessing this problem is more common that it may seem?

It is not a major problem for me, having two AIS receivers. But I choose to have two so I have a fallback so I prefer to have it working in OpenCPN.

Re: AIS and CPA / TCPA

rramsey...

When I get the time I'll run the WE VDR recording through OCPN debug, and sort it out. But it will be while. Maybe a Flyspray task would be a good idea to capture the bug while it is fresh.

Or maybe some other debug dev can help with this.

Hakan? TDan?

Thanks
Dave

I added it to flyspray. Thanks for helping Dave and bcn!
