again sound problem and ubuntu

Hi all,

after I read about Opencpn Sound problem Linux Mint 13 and the advices of cagney. I tried to install as advised and didn't succeed. So I don't loose too much words and add the files caney wanted to see. And, by the way,I use Ubuntu 16.04:

k@X240:~$ dpkg-query -l libwxgtk* libsdl* opencpn*

I hope that's enough for some good hints for me. My impression is, I should have removed the ubuntu files before. Is this the problem? And how to do?

Thanks in advance

Kurt

Please take this from the beginning again. How did id you install OpenCPN and what version? Did you follow the instructions? What exactly is your problem?
Can you play mp3 but can't get sound from OpenCPN??
I had to reinstall Kubuntu 16.04/64 from scratch a few month ago and never had any problems with OpenCPN sound, whether I install a package or compile myself.

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

Hi Thomas, thanks for your reply,

I used ubuntu 17.04 and opencpn on it out of
ppa.launchpad.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu
on a Lenovo Thinkpad X240.
At some day I was without sound in opencpn, no anchor alarm and no AIS alarm. And only in opencpn. No problem with mp3 and sound in other programs.

Ok. I told myself. Obviously you mustn't have always the newest programs and went back to ubuntu 16.04. New installation. And was happy! The opencpn, again installed out of ppa.launchpad.net/opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu gave me back the alarm sounds. It was , and is, opencpn version 4.6.1 Build 2017-03-29.

But only for 2 days. Without any reason, as far as I was able to realize, the old situation again. No sound in opencpn, all other sound in force.

Then I read this old thread with the same problem in Mint and installed

k@X240:~$ sudo apt install libwxbase3.0-0-unofficial libwxbase3.0-dev libwxgtk3.0-0-unofficial libwxgtk3.0-dev wx3.0-headers wx-common^C

out of Index of /wx3.0.3/ubuntu

but didn' change my problem.

This is the situation now and I'm not happy with this.
I hope I didn't forget something and please don't care my bad English

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

try installing pavucontrol, and run it when opencpn is playing sound. Maybe it sent the sound to the wrong device.

Thumbs up Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

Kurt
I run the same as you Ubuntu 16.04/64 and Open 4.6.1.

Go to
Options:User Interface:
Just below play ships bells is "Sound Device Index"

"4" in this box works for me, I couldn’t find any info in the manual as to what this setting is or does.
From installation "0" was the only way I could get sound to play through other software but this wouldn’t allow sound in Open, however "4" has always delivered sound in Open and no sound on the rest of the computer.
So I just ran with "4" and no music.
Latest updates of Ubuntu seem to be the reason why all sound now works with "4".

My suggestion is you play with this maybe you will find a setting that suits your hardware.
Also make sure Ubuntu is up to date.

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

Good one redog!

I used to have a lot a lot of problem once with this index.
My default, from installation is -1.
This ties in wit boat_alexandras suggestion.
Definitely worth playing around with.

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

Thomas/Kurt

3 computers here all using different settings,-1, 1 and 4.

I found no reference to this setting in the manual.

If it is referenced, could someone point me to it please?

If not, how can we get it added please?

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

I added this option a while ago because some water got inside my computer and killed the sound card.

I am probably more guilty than anyone of adding "features" to opencpn without documenting them and causing confusion... -1 should just use the default audio device. I think anyone can edit the wiki?

I have used usb sound ever since, but hdmi was the default sound output so I need the option. Also needed the option for weatherfax to capture from non-default interface. With newer ubuntu versions and pulseaudio the issues are not so bad, basically it's a lot smarter and -1 should mostly work all the time. You can also change the priority or even unload or blacklist kernel modules to re-order audio interfaces. I eventually killed the whole computer from water, but now the next computer doesn't even have an audio port so I'm back to usb audio.

It might be useful to have a different interface for music vs alarms.

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

Hmmmm,

I installed pavucontrol, did no effect, uninstalled it.

I found this "List Sound Devices". Huups, never seen before. I tried all possibilities from 6 to -1 and sadly had no effect.

Now I'm afraid my installation of the wxWidgets 3.0 wasn't so successful and has done things worse as before. Is it possible someone can have a look on my initial post and whether the files there look nice or I should remove some?

boat_alexandra
OK
If anyone can access the wiki, that’s fine, but I am afraid my contribution here would be minuscule.
My understanding of this feature is only that 4 worked and now I try your suggestion of -1, I find that that also works.(didn't last time I tried, as I went through all the numbers)

Could you expand on what each setting might be aimed at?

Does below mean you could have different sound sources going out different outlets?
eg HDMI, comp speakers, headphone jack, USB

"I have used usb sound ever since, but hdmi was the default sound output so I need the option. Also needed the option for weatherfax to capture from non-default interface. I see options -1 to 7 not 6 as you state.
Also don’t forget apply button after each change.(Sorry if I state the obvious)

Ubuntu system settings/Sound sometimes gave me grief.(look at your output channel)
I have had HDMI plugged in but TV not turned on, so no sound, as Ubuntu defaulted to HDMI.
I also found, like you, I had placed too much trust in most recent version of Ubuntu, and had to reinstall previous version. This gave me grief as well.

Current install 16.04 on pre-formatted HDD and all updates applied, has worked flawlessly.

Re: again sound problem and ubuntu

Hi all,

my sounds are back again!

I was playing around with several parameters recommended in the above mentioned posts and not really be sure, what was the real effect. But the last knob I pushed was to turn in the pavucontrol delivered with the system, not the one installed extra, change the "Einstellungen für die Lautsprecher"(first tab) to "Analog Surround 4.0 Ausgang".

And now too in the 4th tab there are 2(!) Anwendungen "ALSA plug-in [opencpn]"
Additionally all system sounds work as they should.

For the options -1 to 6 I can't find any difference for me.

I suspiciously will see, how long it will last and come back, if it's disappearing again.
In the meanwhile many thanks for the common help
