Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

After a frustrating search I have finally found an free app that will add photos or sound to a waypoint, saves as a gpx file opens in OpenCPN and displays as additional information. Here is the link

http://activityworkshop.net/software/index.htmll

Remember to name your waypoints before opening in gpsprune or they will be imported as track points. Remember to connect the photos or wav file to your waypoints

The software is GNU so should be able in use in a plugin by someone a lot cleverer than me

No charge

Regards

Richard

Re: Adding Photos and sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Richard...

You can already do this using the straight forward,OCPN compatible 'Bungee' as described in my thread "Google Earth Track and Simulation" and also under Navigation as "Testing out GE Bungee".

With the OCPN utility 'Additional information' box you can add any number of links to whatever you desire from your laptop or the internet.

Re: Adding Photos and sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Please tell me how with Bungee I can link photos or sounds to a waypoint that can be used in OpenCPN and display the photo or play the sound via the additional information box in OpenCPN. I keep getting a runtime error with Bungee 6.2 I have not upgraded to the registered version which costs 15 GBP

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Well,I haven't puzzled at this too much but I'm glad you guys are in the fray...sadly, with my cursory and impatient efforts,neither is working for me.

Ocpn wants THIS as the tag line buried in the gpx...
<link href="file:/// etc.>
<text>some text that'll appear as the link</text>
<type>file</type>
</link>

and these don't write that into an existing mark yet for me....it's that "file///" that seems to be the hitch,but I'm happy to be corrected.

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Save your required Mark and insert manually (notisblock) your required links as in this example:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<gpx version="1.1" creator="OpenCPN" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xmlns:gpxx="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd" xmlnspencpn="http://www.opencpn.org">
<wpt lat="58.019598130" lon="7.415961328">
<time>2011-09-08T22:03:07Z</time>
<name>EXTRA INFO-1</name>
<link href="d:/Program files/GPX/Mandal-Arendal.kmz">
<text>Mandal-Arendal track</text>
</link>
<link href="d:/Program files/Bungee/Bungee.exe">
<text>Edit/Simulation</text>
</link>
<link href="http://www.2sandnessjo.no/shipplotter/gmap/oslo.html">
<text>AIS targets</text>
</link>
<link href="C:\Program Files\Zoner\Photo Studio 13\Program32\Zps.exe">
<text>Photo editor</text>
</link>

<sym>triangle</sym>
<type>WPT</type>
<extensions>
<opencpn:guid>2c7b0000-4d26-4388-9843-5bc85c5bffff</opencpn:guid>
<opencpn:viz>1</opencpn:viz>
<opencpn:viz_name>1</opencpn:viz_name>
</extensions>
</wpt>
</gpx>

Save the file as EXTRA INFO-1.gpx (or similar) and now import it to OCPN .
Right click and select the 'Additional information' from the box menu.
You will now have a box with all the links you entered.

Have fun!!

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Here is OpenCPN displaying a photo linked to a Waypoint and the Google Earth Plugin displaying a photo linked to a placemark. Gpx and Kmz file were exported from the java app after the photos were linked

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Richard..

GPSPrune sounds like a great facility but I am affraid I usually shy away from command line programs needing a number of variables to function. I prefer a stand alone program which requires a minimum of inputs as I'm not a programer. I had a look at the GPSPrune website but am affraid it scared me away with it's complexity.

In your #7 there are TWO different photos displayed,one in GE,the other in OCPN.
How can they both originate from the same waypoint?

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Thanks,Richard!I'll try again(with Prune)
...Interesting...I see I am apparently wrong with the 3 slashes thing.I am having a little difficulty with the Prune interface too.I open an opencpn mark and when I make a photo link,it's a bit tricky linking it directly into the existing opencpn mark-these haven't worked yet,although the photo link has been written in to the gpx.
I see by your example header that this is a gpx created solely with prune-but I will try it thataway too.
nothing a little practise won't solve I hope.

sinbad,yes I can write it in manually,I know.I'm hoping for browse to...
oh and per Prune it's a java app and no command line.It's a bit like a cell phone app.You do need a version of java installed that'll run java outside a computer's internet browser...

I created the waypoints firstly in OpenCPN exported them as a gpx then opened it in gps prune.then connected the photo to the waypoints then exported the gpx file to open again in OpenCPN.I also saved waypoints as a kmz file but ensured I had the save thumbnails selected or the photos will not appear in GE. As the app is open source it could form the basis of a plugin to add. Additional information to waypoints But it's written in Java.

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

In prune your waypoints should appear in the waypoints list
You must name the waypoints first in OpenCPN or else prune will import the gpx as a track
Your photos should be listed in the Photos list
Select a way point from the list or on the map display. Select the photo you want to link from the photos list. Now this is very important from the Photo menu at the top of the app, select connect to point.
When you export as gpx ensure you select waypoints and photos in the GPX dialog box then the code for the photo link is included in the exported gpx code.
If you export as kml again ensure wayponts and photos are selected in the dialog box and ensure you select Compress to kmz and export thumbnails
In GE the kmz will display a placemark and a camera icon
Click on the camera icon to display the photo

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

Richard..

MY purpose was to add photos in OCPN in a previously recorded track.
I imported the track .gpx file to Prune and added the relevant photos.
I would have expected the photos to automatically become attached to their
respective waypoints but I saw no photos in Prune.

On clicking each photo and then a selected waypoint,and finally press Connect to point,the photos were located where I wanted them,after which I exported as .gpx.

When I finally imported the altered .gpx file into OCPN I had expected to find the photos embedded,showing some sort of icon,but nothing appeared.

You mean to say you have to treat EACH waypoint individually,giving it a name,before you can attach a photo?

I had another,previously recorded track with waypoints every few seconds. For a long trip you can imagine the enormous number of waypoints,so i was happy to see you could
reduce the number of waypoints using Prune's compress method. All in all,another very useful utility.

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

OK,I imported a dedicated waypoint as .gpx and the corresponding photo into Prune,connected to point and saved as .gpx

Importing this saved .gpx file into OCPN showed the mark,which opened the Additional info box when selected. BUT,the photo was displayed in my default graphics editor,covering the entire page and not as a small pop up photo. Where did I go wrong?

Re: Adding Photos and Sound to OpenCpn Waypoints

I changed the Vista default graphics editor to the zoomable Picasa Photo Viewer which now displays the photo against a slightly darker but translucent map background which looks quite good.

Anybody know of a different,smaller,pop up type photo display?
