Looks good, mate! Hope that it cures the roundup issue.

It does have a foil shaping. Good on you.

Let us know how she handles.

Fair Breeze.

Re: Why is my boat pointing into the wind?

Best news boyz: been out 5-6 times with the new rudder and she is working perfectly! Been mostly light wind so far but we did get around 20 knots one evening and we purposely sailed her very hard burying the rail and still never had a single round up yet! Still pretty confused as to what could have been wrong with the last rudder but I am extremely happy that my 1000 hours of build time and 700 dollars of supplies didn’t go to waste. If any of y’all are in the Seattle area and wanna come drink some beers on a 500 dollar boat id love to have you. Here’s a photo of my fried friends in the clothes I have been making to match the cushion covers I made for entertainment purposes

Is a key way something to attach a emergency rudder? We did a square that fits a 3/4 breaker bar , seems to work ok I think it would get me home just fine in a pinch

Re: Why is my boat pointing into the wind?

Awesome news regarding the lack of rounding up into the wind.

Did you experience any weather helm? Which is what you feel pulling on your wheel or tiller where the boat is trying to turn you up wind under certain sail trimming conditions, which we referenced in earlier posts.
Or did the boat sail true without needing much countering helm [downwind turning] to keep it from heading up?

It looks like you had adequate amount of "rail meat" available to ballast your boat if the wind came up and if need be just shift the kegs of beer to port or starboard.

The image below is of a key way / slot, a key, and key seat which is a common method of providing for torque transfer between a levering object, [e.g, your tiller / rudder turning quadrant] and the shaft.

Hope you and your friends enjoy many grand days on the water.

Well... so how is the quadrant fixed on the rudder stock? Is it just clamped on really tight? That may come loose and slip. I am happy you solved the problem though! And when I get up there to visit my sister I'd like a nice Murder of Crows Stout please.

Re: Why is my boat pointing into the wind?

What good news! Glad that it has worked out for you, and I reckon that your new rudder's performance vindicates those of us who guessed that stalling was the cause of the roundups. The new shape and plan view look lots better than the old one hydro dynamically and I guess that you must feel pretty chuffed with yourself.

Well done!

Jim

No weather helm the boat seems to hold course very well.

Yep no shortage of rail meat and beer

The quadrant has a large pin running thru it and rudder post

Yea I guess that must be the case huh what a trip I feel like I got real lucky it all turned out so well . I wasn’t keeping you guys updated on how poorly the rudder construction started ... I leaned that when you don’t mix two part foam just right polyester resin will melt/warp it. Lots of fairing puddy and I got it straightened out but what a stressful expensive ordeal. Absolutely 10/10 chuffed with myself
