What is this tool used for?

Good morning,

I am finally getting around to sorting through all the odds and sods the PO left. The PO is no help...judging from his log book all he did was motor and BBQ. Both of which work great!

Can anyone tell me what this is for?

Thank you!
Markus

Re: What is this tool used for?

I think it is used to help feed jib into the slot of a foil.

That is a prefeeder for the headsail.

Tie it off below the extrusion so that it aligns the luff tape with the groove in the extrusion.

Vote 3 for jib pre-feeder.

No...it absolutely is used for killing seagulls who are sitting on the tangs and crapping all over the blue awnings.

It is to help feed the Genoa into the track on a racing boat. The line is tied to the stem head and the sail bolt rope is fed into the mettle "thingy" and then into the sail track.

Re: What is this tool used for?

OK, so everyone knows that it's intended purpose is prefeeding a bolt rope into a foil.

But everything on a cruising yacht must have at least two uses... so let's figger out some good ones.

Perhaps a tortilla folder for making neat creases in tacos.

It looks kinda like the funny pliers that are used to lead bovines about by the nose. Those are quite adjustable... maybe this one is a fixed size for leading a specific size steer around?

Some one of you guys must have used one of these items "off label" so 'fess up and help the OP justify keeping it on board.

Re: What is this tool used for?

Hey, you guys are great! My learning curve just took a steep climb. I may have to drop the headsail to try it out. If I can't figure it out, I'll be back with more photos.

A second use would be handy as well.

Thanks much,
Markus

Re: What is this tool used for?

Racing or not, this pre-feeder is used when a jib with a luff tape is is hoisted. Position it so it will drop off the tape as the sail is nearly up. It eliminates the necessity for someone feeding the luff tape into the headfoil as the jib is hoisted.
If you put up the roller furling jib when you buy the boat and then leave it up you probably don't need a pre-feeder cluttering the foredeck.

Re: What is this tool used for?

On my Bayfield 29 this feeder recoils back into the lower fuller unit so it is out if he way. Possibly that's where yours goes but the recoil spring may be broken.
Also could be used as a pretend nose piercing, for those who are afraid of needles.
