pirate Re: What a nutter

A Challenger 3.... a cheap beach toy dinghy that costs about £45... or used to a coupla years back..
Bad place to start from as well... strong tides.. and races that give big sailboats trouble if they get caught out taking a short cut...
If he'd looked like he might make reasonable progress he'd likely have been left alone... but 12 hours in and 2 tide changes he's 5 miles E of his jump off... heading for the race's off Swanage... and the Point...
We love crazy.... but when it turns to stupid... pull em in and provide some basic info..

And here I thought sailing was all about the journey. If you just want to get someplace, you hop a plane and skip all the messy time at sea.

Re: What a Nutter

He was very lucky. He might have drowned and his million dollar life insurance would have gone to his wife, and helped to pay off his debts owed to drug dealers. Now he must go back to shore and probably will have his legs broken or his knee caps smashed,
either by the drug dealers, or his wife.
It might have been worse, so he is lucky.

Just thought I'd accuse him of all kinds of things without any basis because this is the internet and he was not successful.

+1 imagine the slagging he'd get on CF if he'd pressed the red button ,( assuming he had one)

You've caught on. He would have been a hero if he'd made it with no watermaker or latest GPS chartplotter and AIS/SSB.

Oh, I agree. However, I'd say he was excessively poorly prepared for a circumnavigation via the North-East and North-West passages, even by the "go early with what you've got" standards many espouse.

Well I say good for him. it's allright for us in our yachts to critisise. He was happy and he was trying out a new adventure. Just like the old explorers.

Now a days it is all health and Safety. BOLLOCKS. I reckon he was a brave heart if maybe a bit stupid.
