UK built need US valid HIN

Freedom 35 built UK 1985 USCG documented need 12 character HIN for insurance purposes. Not formally imported. Sailed here. USCG unresponsive to my inquiries about having them cook up HIN. Any experiences obtaining state assigned HIN? Boat is currently in MD. Thanks.

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

Likely built before UK builders started using HIN numbers,

You could try the owners association or just make one up.

I'm no lawyer, but it seems to me, that a 'made up' HIN, might result in' made up' insurance.

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

I would be happy to make one up but when the insurance company goes to a database of not made up numbers I might be accused of stealing the boat. In any case I don’t think a cooked up number will do the trick. Thanks!

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

Has anybody in this vast collection of boaters ever obtained a state assigned HIN?

How would someone in the US check up a 35 year old yacht manufactured in the UK by a company that may no longer exist. If they did exist, would they have records going back 35 years?

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

Most states can assign a HIN to homemade or older boats, and should have some provision for foreign boats built before local HIN requirements. You may want to do a State registration to get a number. Also, I believe the Coast Guard authorizes import agents to assign US HINs to new imports. You might reach out to a foreign boat importer for advice/assistance.

Ok let’s rephrase this. Who has obtained insurance using USCG official number! No HIN! Thanks

If your boat was built in 1985 it should have a HIN somewhere...

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

Make one up and get a metal tag with it on . Attach it to the boat.

After all it’s just a number

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

There seems to be no alternative to making up a number as suggested. Base it similar to the style of an actual HIN number so that you can get the boat insured. There is no way that records will go back 35 years and, if asked, you can say that you bought the boat with the number on it. It is after all only an ID.

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

most euro mfgrs of boats issue a ' certificate of origin' bearing all kinds of data and numbers. ( siltala of finland provided me w a certificate of origin which also included a hull ID no. ) ideas: do you have, or can you get the cert of origin ? do you have, or can you get, a statement from freedom yachts UK that they did NOT use HINs in the year your boat was mfgd ? did any previous owner sell thru a broker who maybe kept copies of the cert of origin or original bill of sale w the HIN on it ? i once had to go to court in pittsburgh PA to sue my government because our state vehicle/boat titling agency rejected the piece of paper i had from a bank 'Ocwen' that was no longer in existence, which paper work from ocwen proved that my seller had indeed paid off the boat lien IN FULL. it took a judge 5 minutes to accept my 'non notarize' paperwork proving valid loan payment by my seller of the lien Ocwen once had on my boat. ( done by me, without any lawyer. ) PM me once you get as muc info as you can, you may hafta sue MD...

Re: UK built need US valid HIN

Just bought a 1984 boat built in Taiwan and it has a HIN so it is surprising your 1985 boat did not have one somewhere engraved on the hull. Might check for a Vessel Official Number (VON) either: (a) an International Maritime Organization (IMO) number, assigned by IHS Fairplay on behalf of the International Maritime Organization or (b) a Vessel Identification Number (VIN) assigned by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). A USCG abstract of title might reveal the number, albeit my recent 1984 boat purchase did not.
