Practice drogue steering?

Next season I want to practice drogue steering so I am prepared in case of an emergency.

Since I'll still have a rudder, I assume the boat will behave differently than in a real emergency with a lost rudder.

Has anyone tried this? Will whatever I learn regarding setup and use from this practice be applicable in a real emergency?

Leave your wheel loose to let the rudder turn freely, this should at least mimic steering failure/loss of helm..

You will learn a lot and it’s a great skill to practice.

Make sure you take the time before you deploy the drogue to plan out how your lines will run.

Also be aware that there will be a lot of pressure on the drogue, lines and other gear if you are travelling at any speed. This can put a lot of stress on your equipment if you’re not ready for it.
