Re: Irma Knocked Our Dream Off Stands a Week After Purchase
DenverSailors,
It really is going to depend on how badly it is damaged. Some boats survive being dropped okay, others, don't, and falling on its side is sort of like that. All the bulkheads and furniture might be loose. Maybe not. The impact area may be crushed, and that is a death knell. Depends on what that crack near the keel to hull joint really is, too.
Not knowing must be really tough, and now Maria's bearing down. My heart goes out to you.
Ann

As I said earlier, and as it has been said since... Get it surveyed again. No short cuts.

Re: Irma Knocked Our Dream Off Stands a Week After Purchase
Thank you again.
The crack in the photo is on the skeg. The keel looks ok though we won't know until she's lifted back onto stands in the next few days.
We are awaiting the adjuster's report and then, based on your recommendations, our surveyor will REI Specht and compare notes.
Again...many, many thanks for your thoughts and shared wisdom.

I feel like the yard which took care of the dry stand is legally liable in full (as much as when a travel lift fails). They had the custody.
A yard of reputation subject to north Adriatic Bora (NE 7-9) regularly FASTENS standing boats onto large concrete blocks. No Kidding

Noticed that the sails are still on the boat. Always strip all canvas when preparing for a hurricane. If the yard might have taken responsibility, they won’t if the boat is not properly prepped.

So sorry to hear this. Stay positive; and even if, worst case, your vessel is a total loss, remember that every ending is a new beginning. You just have to look for it. Best of luck.

I appreciate that. When we saw Irma's projected path we called the yard and asked that they pull in the mainsail and the stack-pack but they were overwhelmed with other prep and could not allocate a resource to do that. My gut is grinding because I feel that was why we were blown over. Alas, unless and until insurance or the yard denies coverage/restoration it seems moot. Frustrating. But moot.

Uhhhh, no expert here but maybe some things shouldn't be talked about in an open forum until after the insurance settles.. Just sayin'

It is very hard to see from the picture but it does not look like the stands were chained together. That should always be done and if not done, will pretty much garauntee that the stands will move in any forcefull wind.

Re: Irma Knocked Our Dream Off Stands a Week After Purchase
When I looked more closely at the picture, it looks like the stands on the adjacent boat also are not chained together. We can also note that neither the roller nor the main got trashed.

The boat was pulled out to do a bottom paint job (not in our presence). It was completed and resplash was delayed due to Irma. I assumed the crack was not there previously because the fresh paint would have covered it. No?

Re: Irma Knocked Our Dream Off Stands a Week After Purchase
Looking at the staining coming out of the crack, I would say it is an old one.
