Insurance challenges

Hello Everyone,

Been reading for months, but this is my first post.

I am taking a leave of absence this coming year to go sailing and on mission work with our family. Transatlantic crossing, Mediterranean, then back to the Caribbean, and the USA.

We have spent the last six months evaluating, looking at, deciding on, and recently making offers on our boat of choice.

We are financing the boat, and I thought that would be the difficult part, but it was actually very easy to secure the loan on the boat.

What seems to be the sticking point is insuring the boat. We have been turned down by two insurers so far due to lack of experience with crossings.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Try Pantaenius or other specialized insurers.

If I remember correctly, Pantaenius is the insurer several Dutch sailors with little experience used.

Hi Keith,

You don't mention your general boating/sailing experience. I found my insurer BoatUS very receptive to a list of my prior experience, boats owned, etc. If you can't document a lot of prior experience taking some classes might help get a better response.

Re: Insurance challenges

Can you consider insurance for coastal first. Build some credibility and after 6 months get new quotes for the crossing?

On a related note, do insurance companies normally cover the Bahamas? The Carribbean?

Depends on the boat, the owner and the policy. Most US insurers I know about do include at least the near Bahamas if the owner has reasonable experience.
