Do you actually like sailing ?
A while back we had a pontoon party in Las Palmas and a lady went around asking people if they actually liked sailing. A silly question it might seem, but the majority actually didn't really like the sailing that much, husbands and wives alike. Most were just in it fo the life style and the crusing but not the actual sailing. I think most would agree that a nice sail in sheltered waters with good wind and a boat that just flies over the water with a nice scenery in the background is good on any day. But how many of you are actually in it for the sailing?

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
hampus-- i LOVE my brick and how she sails in winds--lol gimme 60 kts and she will fly under reefed jib and reefed mizzen--is fun!!! and catching fishies while sailing is a gas--trolling for dorado wasnt allthat successful- but i caught tuna , bonita and barracuda for dinners..LOL....you didnt give the option for liking allll of it except the flies in marinas--i hate those---prefer anchorages without bugs.
sailing, even in 60 kts , is peaceful and comfortable....even the rolling..LOL. HAVING to get somewhere sux, but WANTING to do that is good.

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
Similar question at the bar the other night. Who goes out for a saturday afternoon sail?
Virtually no one. I sure don't. When I get to port/anchorage I am there till the next port/anchorage etc beckons. I don't just zip out for a day sail just for the heck of it.
But I love sailing

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
Yep. I'm off the dock every chance I get. Whether I'd still like it after a month at sea is another question. But I am out for a couple of hours every other day, unless I'm travelling. Not to mention race night.
It's the zen of it all.

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
I answered "Other" because I'm still in school and have only sailed a small dinghy on a small lake and really have no idea what "cruising" really is... but I hope to jump in with my ankles and wrists cable tied!

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
Love the sailing but I am a single hander in a 47 foot loa boat hard to skip off the dock and day sail... but I still do. Give me blue water and several days on the ocean and I am in my element, add a mermaid and I am in heaven

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
Answer: Yes... that's why I do it. I also like the cruising aspects, but the physical enjoyment of sailing is very important to Ann and I both, and that's why we have made the choices in boats that we have -- they are fun to sail.
Cheers

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
The best part of sailing is the independence, forgetting about shore-side worries for a brief time and focusing on the boat. It is the last corner of freedom in this world. It is also a power trip, being in control, or at least accountable for your ship, crew. I think to me sailing is not about the destination but the time spent getting there, whether it is a harbor day sail or an overnight trip, or a major cruz.
Give me a ship and a star to steer her by and I am good to go.

Been sailing 50 yrs., so yes I love sailing. That's why I've owned sailboats since I was 8 yrs old.
What's not to love....

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
I got into sailing to travel and my hope was we didn't hate sailing. To that we probably would have continued down the path as long as we found it a kind of neural experience. But we like it when things are reasonable out (yesterday had to come back to home port and it wasn't "reasonable")
But I wonder if the answers in the poll would be different if it was resistricted to sailing as cruising only, and not sailing in general.

Re: Do you actually like sailing?
Love it. I love the exercise and then once everything is set and I'm on a long tack I love to stare at the water, endlessly in fact. I'm rarely bored by the tedium but then I'm a coastal cruiser and it's never more then daylight to the next anchorage. I go out and sail nowhere just for the sailing.
