so we arive at the marina, myself Mark and Bill we a greeded by an employe...hi there we need a slip for the night...ok I think its $30, so each of us give the guy $10...the guy meets with the boss and he says the slip is only $25 pleas give them back $5...so the guy is thinking how will I devide $5 3ways?? ok il give them $1 each and keep $2 for me.

so basicly we paid $9 each for the slip =$27
and the guy kept $2 =$29

my question is where is the last $1????????

Re: vanishing act...

Actually I think you paid $9 each for the slip and gave the employee a 66.6666667 cent tip each.

Total slip cost was $9.66666666666666667 each.

edit, no scratch that, it doesn't add up either. My head hurts now.

Someone else will have to explain this one.

Re: vanishing act...

the 3 of you each paid $9 =$27. Less $2 to bum marina jock leaves $25 for marina. Nothing about $29 here.

Re: vanishing act...

$25 divided by three people. $8.33 each.

$2 tip to employee. $.67 each

total paid out. $27.

So that was $9 including the $.67 tip. Not $9 plus $.67 as I stated before.

My head still hurts.

You did that on purpose didn't you Jobi. I need a beer now.

Re: vanishing act...

Of course ggray is totally correct, you each paid $9 of which the marina took $25 and the guy took $2.

BUT if anyone out there in CFland is still concerned about a missing dollar, please PM me as I have a couple of really good deals going at the moment and you can still get in early and make a killing.

Re: Vanishing Act ...

A few months later, two of the original three (Mark & Bill) check into the same marina. The dockmaster says the bill is $20, so each guest pays $10. Later the dockmaster realizes the bill should only be $15. To rectify this, he gives a linehandler $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the boat, the linehandler realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the linehandler decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $3 for himself.

Now that each of the guests has been given $1 back, each has paid $9, bringing the total paid to $18. The linehandler has $3, so $18 + $3 = $21, and the guests originally handed over only $20, so that's where the missing dollar from the original problem is!

You got screwed Steve B.
