well you have to consider the intentions of the boarders when 1st and 2nd lines don't make them go away. IMO, your life is as stake when they decide to start kicking in the steel bars with all the sirens and strobes and stuff going on.

The delayed entrance gives you time to prep for line 3 defense. For us, it is a lethal one so we will warn them while they try to get inside. Any sane person would give up at that point but drugs and alcohol can prevent the SOB from recognizing his hopeless position... meaning you need to be tough as nails yourself too and make sure you win.

The important thing is to not ignore the possibility of a violent boarding and making a plan that suits the crew. I think too many cruisers refuse to think about it while they do go cruising in areas where these violent boardings occur. Like an ostrich hiding it's head under the sand :S

I have some cruising friends who've done the following:

- boat has fully enclosed pilot house with lock on door and the ability to steer the boat from inside
- electrically charged life lines activated from inside the boat (not powerful enough to kill, of course, just to toss the unsuspecting bad guy in the water)
- police siren and strobe
- electric windlass so anchor can be retrieved from inside the boat
- they always anchor watch
- they always lift up the dinghy
- they always leave a trail on the GPS chartplotter so they can backtrack in the dark and flee the anchorage if needed
- bear spray and spear guns
- did I mentioned they always anchor watch?

They escaped pirates twice while cruising Central and South America. First time they pulled anchor and backtracked when they saw a suspicious boat aproaching after dark. Second time they were chased while under way and they simply kept going as fast as they could until the pirates gave up. In both cases they used the police siren and the strobe lights.

Thx Nick... just curious. I got flamed by the moderateor on another thread for relating how we repelled boarders when I was working a cash buyer fish packer years ago. We carried several thousand $ in cash in reomte fishing grounds off the BC coast and you were really on your own out there... don't know why we call them the good old days! CP

And here I was thinking of tying a couple or more rattle snakes in the cockpit area. Or several scorpiens. I think either one of those deterrants would work. Just that in my early morning fog (before coffee) I will have to remember that they are there...

If I wore that scared I would definetely stay in a 'safe' place. Wherev er that might be.

But who knows, maybe I am foolish. My point is I couldn't enjoy life if I was as paranoid as those people

I like the high intensity light and sound (sirens and recorded dogs).

I know any kind of canned gas will probably be a disaster for the user. It’s human nature to approach from down wind (predator instinct) but in a life and death situation, I wouldn’t want to count on that.

I have no problems using deadly force and from first hand experience, I know it works. I also know from first hand experience, people die every day from not resisting and being an easy objective. Armed criminals are not compassionate and they don’t bring implements of death and destruction as ornamentation.

Is there any early warning device that can be trusted? For example, can you set radar to set off a warning of an approaching boat? How about a swimmer?

One of the key elements of winning a fight is being alert. Most people are not, that’s why they’re easy targets. If you knew in advance there was a boat headed your way in the middle of the night, you’d be on pretty equal terms when it arrived. You’d have time to put your defensive game plan into action instead of being caught off guard and helpless.

This could be a very productive thread if we put our heads together and think of some reasonable ideas to defend ourselves, family, friends and ship. I’m interested in alternatives to pulling the trigger.

Everywhere I've sailed I've left my hatches open (at least one washnoard in for privacy) when its warm enough.. although I must admit I'm usually awake music/reading till the early hours in the saloon..
Mind thats only Nth Atlantic/Med/Nth Caribbean.. there's wilder places I guess

I rely on my dog for alot of early warning/detection ( I'm partially deaf). Motion activated lighting is so cheap now as well infared security cameras. Harbor freight has a setup with a monitor n 2 cameras for 150$ right now.
I think believe being proactive with early warning /detection is the best line of defense.
