re: Is it Possible to Sail on the Main Only?
Coyfish, one thought for either this or a future boat is that there are places where you can buy pretty good used sails much cheaper than new ones, such as Bacon Sails in Annapolis or Minney's in Orange Co., California. Sails are a boat's engines -- and would you go out into the ocean on a powerboat where the engine was missing on most of its cylinders?
A really useful thing would be to take an experienced sailor with you to look at boats. It should only cost a few beers; most sailors like looking at boats, especially the better-looking ones (boats that is).

You're so right. Maybe he could borrow an outboard motor, but he'd need the proper mount to use it with a sailboat.

There are tons of places that sell used sails. Google it for your location. Also check Craigslist.

I been scouring through craigs list, found a couple pospects but what I really need is something for long distant cruising and all I've seen is out of my price range. Just got back from my last commercial fishing tour and we didn't hit squat so now my budgets even tighter

Coyfish;
Have the boat surveyed before you buy it. Surveyors charge about $10 a foot.
Anything the surveyor finds that needs to be fixed, could cost more than the boat is worth.
You are one the right course…stay with it.

Re: Is it Possible to Sail on the Main Only?
Coy....google this...Used boats for sale at auction/angel...
If you buy a boat at that auction, you can get all of your money back if you don't take the boat. It is only yours after you move it away from the dock. You could get a 30 footer under $2000. I have seen some go for $200

Re: Is it Possible to Sail on the Main Only?
coy--save your money. sail other peoples boats until you find a decent buy. not just scrappy, but decent. decent will have 3 sails and mebbe an engine whether outboard or inboard. i know of a islander 30 in mazatlan asking 10k would go for 6k cash i am sure.
many boats out there-- just have to find the right one and you dont wanna rush into anything.
boats are like girlfriends--is the passion.
