Challenge: How to Stop Rolling at Anchor

any thoughts on how to slow down the rolling at anchor or mooring ball?

I was thinking of putting 2 five gallon empty plastic buckets over each side so they could fill with water,,,tied to the cleat they should help counter act the roll,,,any thoughts on this

boat is a 35 footer ,,,,just trying to stop the roll a little

Good link Deepfrz ... made a pair just like it out of ply. Very simple, easy to build and effective. Some here have seen the "birds" the commercial guys use I'm sure. Pretty elaborate, but I understand they get used underway as well.

or try a stern anchor into the waves, we used that effectively in Sapzurro, Columbia. There's an entire chapter of a book written on how to bridle your boat from the mooring facing the waves not the wind. But if you're on a mooring, maybe there's not room to bridle or stern anchor?

Davis makes an interesting product called a Rocker Stopper.

It says they can also be used as a drift anchor.
I've never tried them so I can't comment on their effectiveness.

Nice simple design DeepFrz. I have only seen the hinged type before.

Another approach at anchor is to put a rolling hitch (or alternate friction knot) on the anchor rode, run the rope to the down-wave beam of the boat, and use the rope to bring the bow into the wave pattern. (GordMay, etc, posted on this a few times.)

I.e. create a bridle with the main rode on the bow, and the warp to the beam.

Water in buckets over the side may make it worse. The same buckets hoisted to the top of the mast would work well. The stern anchor is one of the best ways. The most expensive way is to buy a catamaran.

That's right. Catamarans are not affected by either wind or wave.

I think CMD was indicating that cats dont roll at anchor. Nothing more or less. I dont think he was indicating not affected by wind or wave. Its one of the many reasons I moved into cats.
