Re: Engine Diagnoses
$200? That seems rather spendy for a head gasket. Oh, sorry I forgot it was a boat, never mind.

Yes...but again it happens 180* out...meaning if it clunked at TDC, it is also clunking at BDC. Puzzling hugh?

Camshaft is 1:2 rotation with the crank so doubtful it has anything to do with the cam.
Can't really say why but I have a hunch its in the transmission.
See if you can locate the area where the clunk is coming from. A stethoscope would help you with that.

You seem to have a good handle on the approach. Unless I see something this weekend with mirrors and a seeing-eye dog, I will yank the engine and detail the engine area and diagnose the engine itself...What ever I find, I will post pictures. Maybe Senior Mechanico will chime in...

Re: Engine Diagnoses
Is that $1200. gasket kit price from Westerbeke? If so there are plenty of Mitsubishi dealers and parts distributors around. I hope you will be able to find a better price than that. Of course its been a loooong time since I bought a gasket set so maybe that's the price...

Re: Engine Diagnoses
180 either direction and clunk? If I wanted to sabotage an engine. I might just drop a bolt down the air intake. Piston coming up to TDC is blocked by the bolt.

Geez louise! Interestingly, the cheapest marine engine I ever bought parts for was my 85 hp Mercedes! A new freshwater pump was $27 from the Dealer, Complete gasket set was something like $150 (1998 prices) It's basically a 240D engine, I guess Mercedes felt it was in their best interest to keep those taxi cabs running for 1,000,000 miles for the publicity!

Re: Engine Diagnoses
Aloha Martin,
This is a hard one. If the engine were seized there would be no turning so at least you know its not burned up. If you can turn it 180 then whatever is clunking to stop it would be a 2 to 1 ratio otherwise it'd be 360 to the clunk stop. Does that make sense? Camshaft has a 2 to 1 ratio and maybe some of the fuel injector pump gearing? Maybe the bolt in the intake would be an explanation on a 4 cycle?
I'll be up all night thinking about this one!
kind regards,
